Most working dogs, like real bust your ass every day dogs, not "yay I do shutzhund once a month", aren't health tested. At least not here or anywhere I've gotten dogs from. If they're working hard regularly faults will usually show up.

This is where we're going to disagree. Cardiac issues will often not show up, unless very severe, in a younger dog, and by the time the disease progresses and the dog drops dead in the field at 5-7 years it's probably already been bred. Orthopedic issues may honestly never present themselves in these dogs unless extremely severe, but I do think it's still important to test for them and avoid breeding affected to affected (which pretty much guarantees you a whole litter of pups with issues and ups the chance that you'll produce a dog that IS affected enough to show it).

To add to my above post, a lot of people (in general) seem to be under the impression that health testing is intended to be a guarantee that you'll never produce a health issue, but since it doesn't, that it's a waste of time. But with the exception of proven DNA testing for the actual gene(s) that cause certain health issues, like cerebellar ataxia or cone rod dystrophy, they're not intended to be a guarantee that someone will never produce a health problem, but rather to ensure that you're not guaranteeing you will produce them by inadvertently breeding affected dogs or like to like.

I agree with sevensins. Problems aren't going to present in a lot of working dogs because they have the drive to work through pain.
Genetic testing (like for ataxia) is a god send. Screening for joints is a little more hit and miss with what you're going to produce but its still helpful.

I work with a lot of border collie people. It took a LONG time for them to adopt OFA hips into their breeding screens, because 'if it has hip dysplasia as long as it can work we don't care'.

Contrary to popular belief, hip dysplasia hurts, a lot, and it is beyond selfish to work a broken dog. I see dogs as tools, but I also see them as living, breathing, feeling beings that deserve our respect. They are our partners, they do everything they can to help us, the least we can do is keep them healthy, and it starts at your stock foundation.

This was supposed to be a happy and positive post but somehow its turned into a thread where people post negative comments and only talk about the the worse things that can happen so its really people just calling me an idiot and saying I'm thick and stupid and have poor judgement so i wont be posting any future pics of my pup just for idiots to sit there and pick faults with Him and i probably wont post on this site again because it doesn't feel like my type of place tbh and i cant see myself having many good convos with many of you and all alot of you have done is pick the fuck out of something that is supposed to be a happy and joy full time for me and nobody is spoiling that for me My pups perfect so tbh i don't even want to hear anymore so called professional opinions! If you guys want to have a debate on poor health and the death of fucking american bulldogs at middle age then please run along and take it else where because i do not want to hear it on what was supposed to be a HAPPY Post....so the prediction is if im correct i deffo shouldn't of put a deposit down,my dog will either die at middle age or live a life of pain and torment due to poor breeding and you all assume this is poor breeding due to a couple of pics ? No one called you an idiot or stupid. No one said your dog is going to die a young age or live with painful health problems either. The su ject of health testing got brought up and it was slightly off topic. No one referred to this specific breeding producing unhealthy dogs because we do t have any information on the breeder other than what you provided which was very little.
