Bull Terriers on the whole dont have many problems whelping...one of my girls gave berth to 11 pups 12 months ago !

quite a few fallacies in this topic....I love a good chat but only if its based on FACTS and ACCURATE information.

i got those ideas from lots of time spent talking to breeders, in forums, on sites, looking at there info, reading on there pages-that a lot of people have the problems that the dogs lose stamina in labor, or they bred to such a large male the pups were too large. I also learned from all this that most breeders prefer AI to keep them from getting hurt, but its more likley the males are too heavy. I am not saying all of them do, but some do.

well Ideas arent always facts are they..some of the things you speak of can happen to any breed of dog..
  5. Hucklebutt

    Hucklebutt Banned Back Yard Breeder

exactly, you are right. people should be responsible and careful when it comes to breeding, since most of that can really be avoided.

yes they should be responsible..what does responsible breeding mean to you?.. even fit conditioned bitches can have difficulties whelping, speak to your vet for advice on this...as some difficulties during whelping cannot be avoided.

well obviously things can and will happen. But it is a fact that dogs that are more physically fit, are healthier dogs, and will have less problems in labor. I mean, some dogs will have no stamina to stay in labor, and stop pushing.

"Overweight dogs tend to have more problems giving birth than dogs at their optimum weight. This difficult birthing is called dystocia. Dogs experiencing dystocia often need veterinary assistance to deliver their pups, and may require a cesarean section (C-section)."

Responsible breeding to me is breeding dogs that are good at something, other than a pretty face. To me the working lab should be bred, not the nicest looking lab. I think you can have both, but its a lot of work. Like I said before, conditioning a dog is a lot more work than to not-and people like easy. For me, dogs that are best at what they do should be bred, temperment should always be top priority as well. To me, it is MUCH harder to condition a dog to pull heavy amounts of weight, to run for long periods of time, to keep trying and to never give up. sounds easy...its not. teach a dog to stack is easy, mine are all stack trained, but training my dogs to condition, takes all of there life. You never stop teach them.

hmmmmmmmmm..so no mention of health testing, no screening of puppy homes..just its fit its fine..sorry theres a whole lot more to being a responsible breeder than what you said..

Why always the reference to Labs? Why don't you keep this too the bully breeds?
I noticed a few rolls of extra fat on the underside of scarlet or was that round muscle?
Why do you feel the need for prong collars on your well trained and behaved dogs?
Lovely photo's and plenty of great scenery out there.

jonny, yes of course those are important too.

your right bullful, right now she is fat. but she has also been on cage rest for her injured knee, so that is why. I can assure you, it wont stay that way. :D

She is also a puppy, and it is not correct to do serious conditioning on a young dog, due to her age and her recent injury she is putting on extra weight, which will happily be turned into muscle.

For reference, here's Jane Killion's twelve week puppy log.:) It stops at the sixth week, but it was pretty interesting going along with it while it lasted.

i use prong collars because they are my tool of choice.

just got back from a gathering with bull terriers, to my suprise no one could control there dogs. They all had them on slip or choke leads, and the dogs were pulling and choking themselves and the owners swinging them back and putting them in a cage when sick of em. Mine were on lead, not pulling, so i dare someone to comment on my prong collars, atleast my dogs can breath! These people could not control one dog, and I had 2 with me!

well I guess if Im getting pronged in the throat..I wouldnt dare pull and move about too much either ...my lot all walk quite nicely on a collar and lead..

atleast my prongs are not cutting off the air supply. I just came back from seeing atleast 10 if not more bull terriers on choke chains, slip leads and they were choking to the point of exhaustion and coughing and gagging.

I just posted some on the other threads in pics section and im about to put some more, of the gathering we just did and we met with scarletts parents and her dads head profile is very impressive, but he is a total fatty lol. like really obese. lol
