Minor Threat's recent post about gameness in a breeding program led me to start this thread. AND before the hate starts flying... this is hypothetical. Just wanting other peoples opinion on a debate I've always had with people that admire the tested APBTs of the old days (and those brave enough to conitnue to do so)

So I always had this debate with a few friends of mine... if you had to pick one or the other... no fantasy world middle of the road stuff but you've gotta pick. So let's pretend we are pre 1976..blah blah blah...

    1. A super rough hard mouthed dog..you know the kind that just crush through competition.

    2. A really deep game dog....we're truly deep / dead game.

What do you pick and why?

I believe it was said by an old dogman FB.. if memory serves Breed your game dogs and match your killers... but I might be wrong on that quote...:)

What do you pick and why?

I prefer gameness over anything. Winning/losing isn't the point IMO (although I understand the desire for it ;) ).

Deep game dog. I think I stated my reason in the other thread, but IMO, a hard mouthed dog will only go so far, but endurance and gameness shall carry a lighter biting dog on through. Sure a hard bite could be helpful, but think of it this way, In the sport of boxing you don't win on power punches a lone, the most enduring fighter usually wins.

I see the deep game dog being the better to breed...and of course you take a deep game dog and cross with a hard biter and hope for the best. But... I think if you had a chinaman style destroyer dog... I think it runs through a soft mouthed deeply game dog.

You know.. if the hard mouthed dog had the body to carry on..he'd be just as good. Owned one, matter of fact

I said Deep game, because from a lot of what I read, a hard mouth dog was good for a one two count, but wasn't good for a long haul. I can't really explain it that well. lol.

genetically speaking...the game dog is more rare. It is a treat that is harder to hold and reproduce (hence crossing redboy dogs into everything a few years ago, the buck x mayday cross, trying zebo and eli with everything)...I'd go with the deep game dog though.

I do see xdogs point and if it only comes down to winning and losing that may yield a higher percentage as Ive said deep game dogs are rare.

If the question was in relation to which I'd rather own, I voted for deep game, simply because I have so much admiration and respect for gameness.

If the question was in relation to which I'd rather have in the pit, I really can't decide. There's pros and cons to both, it's one of those things I'd have to see in action before I'd know. And...I totally suck at sports things anyway.

The way I am looking at it is you have dogs that have truly proven to be game and gone several hours in a match... then you got chinaman who's longest match was what? 38 minutes I think...SE correct me if I'm wrong here. 38 minutes.. and he was leaving bodies in the pit.. Not only did he have a FREAK of a mouth but he was skilled in the pit too... shooting under and hitting the belly and what not. So a super hard mouthed dog with natural pit talent... I really believe he buries the game dog.

Heres my take on it. Personally i would rather have a 3 hour loser than a 30 minute champ. A true deep game or dead game dog is the exception to the rule, and something that is and should be highly regarded. Not saying a hard mouthed destroyer isnt also something to behold its just not the same. Also I understand that gameness isnt really a factor if the fight ends in say 38 minutes like you said with chinaman. Who even knows if chinaman was a gamedog but we know that he was definently a hard mouthed wrecker. Gameness and winning dont go hand in hand as much as some would think. By the way are we choosing for brood stock or for a match dog?

I voted deep game, but the keep a dog is in can do amazing things.

Oh i know.. I said that I feel its easier for a losing dog to proven its game than a winning dog....

As for your question I didn't consider brood stock... just was thinking along match dog terms. Which if I pick a match dog.. give me Chianman anyday..

I think if you have a freak like chinaman and have him go into a dead game dog... that's exactly what you'll end up with a dead game dog.

  14. Then (1976) I would have picked the hard mouthed rough dog. You don't need gameness if you are punishing dogs in less than an hour such as Chinaman. What wins ...well wins.

Gameness is definately a characteristic to breed for. You would want that in your breeding program but as far as the box goes...it's hard to beat a good hard punishing jaw.

Yeah.. but at least he went longer than Chinaman... I mean 38 minues the longest of 5 matches... and if I am not wrong (which I might be).. he killed all 5. Now I personally don't know the level of opponent he was going into.. but damn...

I agree... match your destructors breed game... and try and find a good middle ground

Gameness is the trait that means the most to me. A hard mouth dog is good but most of the time thats all they have. It would be nice to have the best of both worlds. But with a hard mouth you can not test gameness. And like others have said winning does not really matter to me. It is the heart to continue on no matter what.

yea but boxing has gloves ,
and Super rough, hard mouthed dog= real teeth/power to rip through skin and such-draw blood-bleed to death etc.

Endurance wont matter much if you are dead.
