    Just a little FYI

When referring to the SF Whipple case, it helps to point out that the dogs were not pure bred Presa's, the dogs were trained to be aggressive, that their owner was a convicted drug dealer serving time in prison at the time, and that the dogs were commanded to attack the woman by the two people that were "dog sitting".

The only Presa that I know of that has attacked it's owner was in Florida. It was adopted past the puppy stage and it turns out that it had already been sent back to it's breeder because of erratic and aggressive behavior. The breeder then resold the dog to a woman that had other dogs. Bad bad breeder!

The top spots for "human death attributed to dogs" are held by Pit bulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepard. ( Obviously because of sheer numbers in circulation ...........)

Yes, I knew the owner was in prison and part of the Aryan brotherhood. But I never heard the dogs were not pure Presa's. They were purchased to start a kennel and to use for breeding. They were described as being "pedigreed dogs". The female "Hera" was purchased from a kennel called Hard Times Kennels. Quite a bit of money was paid for her I believe, too much money for her to be just a mutt. I could be misinformed, but that is what I read about the case.

Ok, my bad. :o There are two distinct Presa breed lines ( or standards, if you will). The breed was all but extinct in the 60's, and was then resurected in the 70's. The Presa's that we have are recoginized under the AKC-FSS, UKC and UPCC standards. The "Whipple" dogs were not the same lines, but were considered Presas none the less.

  4. "come with a lot of aggression period" - Ridiculous!

My 1.5 year old Presa female at 115 lbs is a sweetheart. THEY ARE NOT NATURALLY AGGRESSIVE! They are naturally protective but a calm, quiet, relaxed family dogs who know who they are and exhibit a quiet confidence like a master Shao Lin. They need to prove nothing, just be what they are.

    :eek::D Aww,...you watched Gang Dogs :lol::lol::lol:.

But seriously Presas and Canes are Great dogs of course not for everyone. We have a couple of breeders at our hospital but there's only one guy that really stands out. Great guy Fantastic dogs (can't remember his name right now), the pups are very well socialized before they go to their new homes. Even then he still works with them after their placed. He stops buy just to socialize and work with his dogs in the lobby.

I feel bad now,...:( I love all up on'em when they come in. I can see him and his dogs but can't remember his name right now. But if I ever got a Presa or Cane it would be one of his.

Canary dogs are just a hyped up version of the Corso. They are what the original Corso breeders TRIED to create. Good dogs IMO for work. Still more suited behind a fence like most mastiffs than any actual PP work. Love watchin these dogs work, their lips on the bitesleeve crack me up! Had one come out, nice dog, but his tongue was much too long for his mouth, always hung out!

Also, the only standard that I know of that was written in English that called for the dogs are not faulted if they could not be touched, were the Donovan Pinscher.

I have a fawn Presa male.
    He's 3yrs old and about 145lb.
This breed is not for first time dog owners.
My dog is people and animal aggressive, but that's what I wanted.
It is important to train him in obedience and bite work so you're in full control, otherwise it's like walking around w/a loaded gun.
Also important: make sure your family don't have to expand ( wife, kid )etc..
He'll get used to people living with him in household and NO ONE ELSE.

I hate when people compare dogs to a loaded gun. A gun itself (loaded or not) is not going to go out and shoot people. It's an inanimate object without thoughts, feelings, or desire. A HA dog is not the same as a weapon in that the dog will make up his own mind to attack with or without the handler around. Not at all the same as a gun.

So, In your experience a Presa doesn't accept a new baby well? It seems a bit odd that a dog would have problems accepting a "people puppy" into the family, growing with it, and respecting it as a dog should respect all people.

Know what bites my butt? People who see rare guardian breeds on the streets or in a store and have the nerve to get pissed when the owner says the dog doesn't like strangers and to please not approach it.

A couple summers ago some guy was walking his two Dogue De Bordeaux. One of my favorite guardian breeds. So, I get half across the street, hollar over to the owner and ask if I can come pet the dogs. He politely told me his male (he had a male and a female with him) isn't stranger friendly and said I should not approach. Ok by me. My neighbor heard the exchange and got all pissed. Umm, they were on traffic leads, perfectly behaved, sat patiently while the owner and I long distance chatted for a bit, and seemed like responsibly owned extra large dogs. I saw no problem. Not all breeds are totally trustworthy with strangers and only a fool owner would let just anyone and everyone approach his guardian breed dogs.

^Agree! As a gun owner, I hate when anyone compares ANYTHING to a "loaded gun".

FYI this wasn't a argument about guns at all. I'm a gun owner as well.
My point was good breed in "people" wrong hands can cause significant damage to others and a bad reputation towards the animal!
