Mr. maverick, I just started walking my girl as she is quite stocky and is over weight. Have you ever used the bicycle thingy to hook your dog up to and exercise them that way?

Esty, Capt. Roxy gave me some homecooked recipes for Tonka when she had her fractured molar removed last month. I cooked chicken breast with the bone in a crockpot with brown rice and carrots. I fed her 3X a day. I didn't realize that it was pretty low calorie. She lost a few pounds and looked better. As soon as I put her back on kibble she is packing on the weight again. I'm thinking of reducing kibble and giving her homemade food permanently. Right now I give her 3/4 + 1/8 cup kibble 2X daily and 1/8 cup at lunchtime. Then she gets a measured TBS of Eagle Pack canned turkey and a TBS of canned pumpkin with each meal.

I was also giving her unsalted canned green beans for treats after her procedure for 12 days.

The best exercise is something the dog enjoys. There is a lot of different exercise. I have had dogs that would run on a tread mill as long as I would let them and had some that didn't like it. A large yard is good to keep them in normal shape. I was lucky enough to have large yards for each dog. They were not house dogs. The best for me was letting them run free in a large area. Not everyone has such a place.

One thing I have always avoided is drawing a dog down too far. In my opinion a little fat is not bad for a dog unless they are getting into shape for something special.
