Victor Formula Changes >>grrrrrr<<

So after several years on Victor food (which I found after months of searching and trial and error), I get a new shipment and it now has peas in it. I switched to Victor after we figured out Griffin is allergic to peas (thanks to much troubleshooting help in here on PBC!), and so I am really aggravated about the change. There are so few pea-free foods out there, and many of the ones we tried didn't agree with Griff.

Anyway, I have ordered some Nature's Logic, and we will see how that goes. It looks to be a good food, so I am hopeful. But, I wanted to let folks know, since I didn't think to re-check the ingredients on Chewy when I ordered, I just hit the reorder button and didn't think about it. I know pea allergy has come up here before, so buyer beware.

On another note, I know Chewy isn't super popular here, but when I chatted with their customer service, they immediately credited my card for the food, even though it turns out the ingredients are updated on their site, they just gave me a refund and said to donate the food to the local shelter. And they are sending a bigger elk antler because I griped about how small the one they shipped was. So, I'm happy with their customer service at least.

PS here is Griffin in a silly hat, for no reason, really, just a smile!

    awww...so cute.
This keeps happening with all of my purchases. Tonka was taking this allergy supplement that was really helping her for over a year and now they changed/cheapened it and it is not as good and I have not reordered. Now I am trying something else that is helping a little. I was going to add Nupro to her food a while ago and discovered that they no longer use shark cartilage. Instead they substituted it with pork cartilage! WTH!

Great... and I recently started using Victor.
Do you know if they change all formulas or just certain ones?

It won't matter on Rosie's, but I'll have to check the others.

I know- it's so aggravating! It's like with everything I buy for Griffin or us, I have to read every label every stinkin' time. If it were a quality improvement, it would be one thing, but it seems to always be about the companies squeezing few pennies more from my purse.

The one that I had Griffin on was the select varieties with grain. Many of their other formulas always had peas, so we were pretty specific in the couple he could have. I think their "purpose" line is still pea-free, but it's much higher protein than works for Griff. And their classic line might be ok, but it's really high in grains and lower in meat. I messaged them on facebook and they did contact me and suggest I talk with one of their customer cervice people to find a new formula, but with the health problems that are associated with peas for all dogs, I just feel like we should switch to something else entirely.

I think Annamaet doesn't contain peas? Did you choose something?

I think Vicki is feeding Muenster? I'm not sure if it has peas or not.

Dr. Tim's all life stages looks really good too.

I'm choosing Annamaet Original Option Salmon and Lamb for one and Royal Canin Digestive Care for another. Let me know what you decided on.

Eagle Pack lambmeal and brown rice doesn't have peas either. I really like their canned turkey and brown rice; I've been using it for a few years.

My vet posted some links on FB on the FDA findings related to CDM.
This is a list of brands with reported cases related to CDM:
    Acana Blue Buffalo Nature's Domain
    Zignature Fromm Rachael Ray Nutrish
Taste of the Wild Orijen Nature's Variety
    4 Health Nutrisource Natural Balance
    Earthborn Holistics Merrick California Naturals

and a list of ingredients to avoid in the first 6 items:
    Peas Lentils Potato/Sweet Potato
    Chickpeas Soy Bean Alfalfa Seeds
    Legumes

I made a list of all the 4 & 5 star rated foods from Dog Food Advisor, then narrowed it down to the ones available from Chewy.com
Then I narrowed it down to all the grain free, dry foods.
Got rid of all the above brands and those that contain any of those ingredients listed as one of the first 6 ingredients.
That left me with 5 foods. I then ranked them in order of price (lowest first)

    Kinetic Performance -26K
    Horizon Complete - all stage
    Dog Lovers Gold -lamb
Dr. Gary's' Best Breed -salmon/vegetables/herb (has peas as the 7th ingredient)
    Bench and Field - chicken
    then
Party Animal - chicken (has peas as the 5th ingredient)

Well, we chose something, and then had to choose again! We tried Nature's Logic turkey, which seems like a really great food, but Griff got really sick on it. It could be that we had to do a sudden change through two foods because of what we could get locally while the Nature's shipped, I don't know.

So now he's on cooked chicken and rice until his gut straightens out, and we have some Victor on the way. I'm not thrilled about the Victor, I don't understand why they think now is a good time to add peas to their other formulas, but it's the closest to what he's been eating, so I think it's good for now. We got Select Beef & Brown Rice and the Professional.

I want to try the Nature's Logic again later, gradually, but it is 38% protein, which has also been an issue for him, so it might never work. But for now, we're accumulating a pile of bags to donate to the shelter!

Kit- this is awesome, thanks! I think we're just going to try to stabilize Griff for now, but I would really like to get him a grain-free pea-free food eventually. We just need to do it more carefully. He can't have any peas at all, even just a couple stray ones from some pasta made him really sick. I'm joking that his gut may have saved his heart, with all the issues going on.

Griff was on Annamaet for a while, I think we switched because the local place stopped carrying it (don't recall for sure). But he liked it a lot, it seemed to be good. We have to be so careful with his gut, we gave him one different meal with the new food, and now, after 10 days of chicken and rice, he is just starting to get back to normal poop again. He's a delicate flower.

Thanks- Chewy was great about the whole thing, when I emailed them about the bags that had the new formula, they credited me right away & just said to donate them. So we're not out any $$ on that, at least.

Yes, these are grain free. Frankie has mild allergies. I THINK Marshall does too. I don't worry a lot about treats, but keep most of their food GF.

    Hi,
I think there is dry food that has gluten free grains?
I just want to say that the Annamaet Original Option salmon and brown rice came and I like it better than others I've tried so far. It looks like Wellness kibble but seems heartier. Anyways, I have never seen Teddy get such a big smile on his face after trying a new kibble...he really likes the taste. I hope it agrees with them.

    Hi,
Any food updates? I tried the Annamaet Original Options and both dogs got sick. I'm thinking maybe the fat went rancid in shipping...115 degrees here.
I ended up trying Hills Sensitive Stomach and skin for Teddy. It only has 12% fat and has been good for his digestion and stools, etc. However, he is licking his paws way too much and I'm thinking it will not work out. He was on their prescription food before this with only 5% fat, which was too low. Tonka is back on Orijen Six Fish because her Demodex returned after the bad stomach virus that they had in July. I'm thinking of trying Nature's Logic...just don't know if it will work for Teddy.

We ended up giving Griffin a course of Flagyl, and his gut issues cleared up almost instantly. I think what happens with him is that he has an issue from a food, gets inflamed, and then some pathogen gets a foothold, that seems to be the cycle. Now we have him on Fromm classic adult, it's not what we want him to be on forever, but just past the end of our summer travel and excitement season, then we are going to try to very gradually switch to the Dr Tim's.

The other thing we've done is switch probiotics to the one called "Probiotic Miracle". It's less strains than the 20+ one he was on, which I've heard can be better, sometimes the more complex ones are actually less helpful. Since the new probiotic, when he does get a little bout of diarrhea, it resolves in just a day or so, where before it would take several days with lots of other remedies and special food. I have their "Enzyme Miracle" ordered, it's supposed to add more help, especially with dogs that have trouble with high protein or fat; it's also supposed to help with allergies.
