Switching from Merrick, suggestions wanted

I let my friend and DIL know about the sale of Merrick to Purina, and of course they're now on the search for a replacement. My DIL is on a back burner for 2 months because the vet derm has the dog on Royal Canine Rabbit to see if their dog has a protein allergy to chicken & beef.

My friend is looking for a formula similar to Merrick. It has glucosamine included, and she gives an additional tablet form to her older dog. She'd like to keep in the same price range if possible. She spends around $60 a month. They'd like recommendations so they can do research. I'm not as well read as you all are, that's why I'm asking for help. I too keep these things in mind should I ever come across the same problem myself.

I'd go with Fromm personally. Privately owned and a top notch reputation.

There's a bunch of other brands (of course) if that doesn't work. I believe it's around $60 per 30 lb bag.

Just FYI, the glucosamine included doesn't really do anything:

Interesting article regarding Glucosamine/Chondroitin in kibble vs supplementing needed vitamins (obviously just nix the raw suggestion, as it doesn't apply here)

Glucosamine: Does Your Joint Support Kibble Stand Up? Dogs Naturally Magazine

Take a kibble with very high amounts of added Glucosamine such as Orijen (1400mg), higher than the kibbles in the article...

Admittedly, the article is a little off in it's math. 1 kg = 2.2 lbs (we'll round that to an easy 2 for this).

If Orijen has 1400 mg of Glucosamine in 1 kg and 1 lb of kibble is 4 cups, that means the dog would need to eat 8 cups of kibble daily to get the proper dosage (depending on size of dog) of Glucosamine.

Most dogs would be GROSSLY overweight eating 8 cups of Orijen (already pretty high cal kibble) daily. Say you have a giant breed that does actually require 8 cups daily, you'd have to increase the daily feeding amounts to allot for the increased dosage of a larger dog.

So the glucosamine already added to the kibble shouldn't even be taken into account when searching for a new brand. .

Thanks Uno! She also asked about Evo this morning after I went to bed. I didn't tell her about the Fromm yet, thought I'd ask for her first.

You're welcome! You know you get me talking about dog food and I'll just go on and on

I don't know much about Evo. No experience with it. A lot of people used to love it and swear by it. But about 4-5 years ago, it was bought out by P&G and most people stopped feeding it. They said the formulas changed and it wasn't as good as it used to be.

That said, I've read their ingredient lists and it's not a bad food. I believe they had a recall back 3-ish years ago when California Naturals had one.

We've been using Fromm for years & we're very happy with it...although I can't speak to your question comparing it to Merrick.

And why do you think I posted it here?! :lolbangtable:Because of all the knowledge you have! I'll tell her to check out Fromm because of you & Miss J. I respect your opinion on such matters. Because you guys know my history with food......DUH :no2:

Me too. Which is why I feed raw ;-)
I absolutely know raw is best for them! I applaud raw feeders, but I can't wrap my head around doing all that myself. I'm the one that does everything for the dogs, plus all the daily chaos with my people! It's too much, and I'm a really tough person, not much grosses me out. But raw does, lol sorry. Ewwwwww

I know. I was the same way. But it got much easier as I got used to it. And I've got some great suppliers so it helps a lot.

I've heard good things about Fromm, but feeding 3 dogs, it's out of my budget.
I was feeding Kirkland, but Frankie does better on NutriSource, and Rikki refused to eat Kirkland, so I put all the dogs on NutriSource.

How did you get past it? Is it economical for 4 dogs? And that would be my concern, finding a quality supplier.

I could feed 1 60 lb dog for $25-30 per month if I wanted to (or should the need arise) but I'd rather opt for where I pay $40-60 per month.

I do most of my prep work when I'm actually processing my haul. I usually end up setting aside an entire day to process and bag up everything. It's a ton of work but it's all done up front so when I'm feeding, I'm not putting in much effort at all.

As for the "ew" factor. I'm good with everything. I mean I'm not eating it so I think that makes it better. And I don't really feed faces. I feed fish faces but that's all I've done. I want to feed a pig face at some point. But I also don't have access to many faces.

Thanks Kit, I've been wondering about NutriSource for my DIL. How long have they been on it?

Mine are all 50 lbs except for lardass who is being fed only 2 cups per day & still hasn't lost a single pound! Hubby says he's not fat, he's big boned. I said he's not Cartman! Ok, faces are ewwww! Uno I've just realized I high jacked my own thread!

Raw is necessarily the "best" for every dog, FWIW. I fed it for 2yrs. Feed kibble now and my dogs look better (IMO) and do just as well.

Have heard great things about Fromm, but have never fed it. Nutrisource is good, I fed that for awhile and was happy with how they did.

I'm on an Orijen kick again right now. I had been feeding Victor HPP for almost a year and was very happy with how they did on it though.

Doggiefood.com is a great site for food, and they're almost always having sales (usually 20-25% off & free shipping). They have a bunch of great brands (no Fromm unfortunately), so that might be a good option to search around.

Jazzy, could you post a pick of the ingredients list? That way she can compare it against the Merrick's list.
