I know someone (an in-law) who buys a cow and a sheep every year. They grind up the sheep and 1/4 of beef for the dogs and give them veggie scraps to supplement. They claim it's cheaper and healthier then the patties, but I kind of have my doubts on that one. Raw is so daunting to me, I looked into it before and decided against it. From what I understand about Raw diet (and that's not much), you need to give them a variety of meat types and a certain ratio of muscle tissue to organs, so they get the right protein amount. Then supplement with raw bones for teeth and aid in digestion, as well as a bunch of vitamins to round it all out. After boggling my head with internet research and a book (I forget the name but it came highly recommended), I went to a few different feed and pet stores and checked online for supplement prices.....yikes! Not to mention the cost of meat; unless you're hitting up the grocery store every night for reduced meat, it can be quite expensive. I'm sure the cost isn't that bad and is probably comparable to what I'm spending now every month feeding Orijen, but that initial investment to stock up on everything you need for the first 2 months is VERY steep. Price, coupled with the amount of knowledge one should possess to feed raw successfully, ultimately deterred me. But, it's a very fine option if you can manage. I would love to feed raw and maybe in the future, I will!

I go to my hometown grocery store and have them order me 40 pounds of chicken necks/backs for $26. I add 10 pounds of turkey tails that cost .40/pound and add livers that cost .40/pound. I add 3 cans of mackerel ($6) and a dozen eggs. I also add Kale and mixed vegetables that I cook and blend in a blender. I add 2 large cans of pumpkin and 3 sweet potatoes (cooked). Then I add 5 pounds of cooked regular potato and some cooked rice. I grind the meat and then blend everything together. I freeze it in 2 day batches and pull it out as needed. Much cheaper than decent dog food. I do mix in half kibble with breakfast just to keep their bodies used to kibble in the event that I need to travel and raw isn't practical. It has worked really well for us. My dogs look great.
