    I plan on buying a dog in the next 2-3 years , right after i purchase my first home and i have been doing "research"

    Probably at least for the past 5 years that research has been on on the APBT ,in the past year or so i have become interested in the mastiffs breeds , bandogs included and have even chatted with some breeders of both breeds.

    More recently though i discovered the south african boerboel , large powerful breed , which allegedly has a good temperament and makes a excellent guard dog. Which are both things am looking for , but they are very price animals about $1,800 + which is FINE with me , especially if a dog is physically and mentally healthy.

    So does anybody have experience with these dogs ? Can speak on whether they would make good pets?

    *p.s i am fully aware of the amount of training, money,time & patience it would take to own any one of the three breeds i mentioned *

    Personaly I have never owned one, but my brother believes in no other breed than a Boerboel, they are excellent guard dogs, protective over the family and very good with kids. They are very strong and need a firm hand some times and if left alone can be very destructive. I once had to help my brother replace his gardens irrigation system as his male destroyed all the sprayers and pipes. zumba.jpg This is his current male named Zumba, my brother paid R3500 for him from a breeder that will be about $350.

    A member on here owned one an her family owned one and I'd get one in a heart beat. They're smart as hell, and know how to perceive a threat naturally. They are extremely powerful and sometimes DA. The only bad thing is their health problems. Definitely looks into someone who health tests their dogs, and look for someone who has dogs with some rear angles. I've seen a load of badly angled bbs.

    I've read about them before, but thanks to this post I spent several hours last night learning more. Now I want one. I used to have the Kane Corso and Fila Brasiliero on my list for first mastiff. This dog has now surpassed the other two by far.

    I even located a breeder near me that health tests and has each dog appraised by the SABT. An appraisal by the SABT means:

    Might be worth checking into the SABT (South African Boerboel Breeders Association) site if anyone's serious about the breed

    I have never personally even met one, but I've done a lot of researching on them and I want one! The ones with good conformation look incredible, but the temperaments sound wonderful. I just really hope they don't get popular. I've already seen a couple on craigslist.

    I fostered one that was used as a guard dog in a junk yard and he kept getting out and they didn't want to pay the fines to get him back. Very powerful dog. He was laid back until he perceived a threat and then he was unstoppable. I would have kept him, but at the time I lived directly behind a ballpark sharing a chainlink fence and he went after anyone carrying a baseball bat. Otherwise I found him to be the perfect dog. He was well behaved inside, easy to train, but not big on formal obedience. Got bored easily with repetitive stuff. Good with most other dogs, but a dominant breed so opposite sex is best. Not for anyone who is frail or weak. You need to be in good enough shape to handle them.

    yea i have found 3 SABT registered breeders who seem to have really good animals stlboerboels and midAtlantic boerboels to name two

    Have also read up a couple of boerboel forums everyone can definitely vouch for there family loyalty & smartness but you have to maintain a constant strong hand with them so to speak even more so than other mastiff breeds , doesn't seem like the become overly aggressive or anything they just become destructive

    importing from SA is also an option for a dog of better stock but i have never liked the idea of flying a animal that distance

    am going to do my research though, might even travel out to one of the breeders which is close to me

    @posisoned, there not wildly popular here yet but there slowly heading in that direction mainly because they started breeding the color black into the breed this guy right is the highest ranked black boerboel i believe

    I'm SURE of the first part--as its the same as the Boer goat. Boer means "farmer" the Boer goat is "the farmer's goat" and Boerboel is "the farmer's dog".

    according to Oxford Dictionaries:

    [h=1]Definition of boerboel in English[/h]
    [h=2]boerboel[/h]Pronunciation: /ˈbʊəbʊl/
    (also boerbull)

    or [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]

    How do you say Boerboel?
    Written phonetically : - 'boorra bol'.
    It's a very full bodied sound with rolling R's spoken quite quickly.

    Guess it depends. lol

    The trainer I use has one at his facility. It's a young puppy and extremely friendly but it's going to grow up to be a hell of a Lot of dog.
    It's definitely not for most.
