  1. I answered a call today from a man that was extremely distraught. He was so frantic on the phone, it took a minute for me to understand his story. Long story short, he got a female pit bull puppy. He has become very attached to her. He decided to breed her to make some extra money despite several people warning him against it. She went into labor on Saturday and she couldn't get the puppies out so he had to pull them out. All 4 puppies were stillborn. Now he's convinced there's a puppy still inside her. I told him to take her to a full service vet immediately. He told me he couldn't afford to take her to a vet. I asked if he could take her temperature and he said he didn't know how to do that. Atlanta Bully Rescue is going to help cover the cost for her to have an emergency spay tomorrow just in case there is a puppy stuck. Over and over again he kept telling me he wished he had listened to people that warned him of this and breeding her was the dumbest thing he's ever done. I asked if she was up to date on rabies and of course he said he hadn't been able to afford to keep her up to date on vaccines, It blows my mind that people can't afford basic care for their pets but they think they can afford to breed them.

The craziest part is that people are dumb enough to buy puppies from backyard breeders when they could adopt the same quality puppies fully vetted from a shelter for a fraction of what backyard breeders charge. People actually spend money on puppies that aren't registered and they take the word of backyard breeder that the puppy is up to date on vaccines and dewormer. Some people try to justify buying puppies from these jerks by saying "they were getting the puppy out of a bad situation" or "who knows where the puppy would have ended up if I didn't buy it." If you buy a puppy from a backyard breeder, you share in some of the responsibility of innocent puppies being euthanized at animal controls for sheer space, you are just encouraging them to breed their dogs again.

Just because you think your dog is awesome doesn't mean for a second you should breed them. Do you know how many awesome dogs there are that are going to be euthanized tomorrow because there is simply no room for them??? And if you think you're going to make money think again. Especially with pit bulls, so many people have no idea how common C-sections are becoming in these dogs because like this guy, people are breeding 40 lbs bitches with 80+ lbs males trying to get the biggest puppies possible. A pregnant bitch needs constant vet care and there's a chance complications could end her life. Before you even think about breeding your dog spend a day at animal control. Look the hundreds of dogs that will most likely have to be euthanized in the eyes and try to explain why your dog deserves to be bred but they deserve to die.

Wow. This post brought tears to my eyes. I'm snuggling my shelter dog as we speak and I am so thankful for him. Wish others could see the same in shelter dogs. :(

I want this painted across the back windshield of my truck.

I can't think about it, or I get insanely emotional...

I don't what to say, aside from how much people f***ing fail as a species.

I don't see anything wrong with breeding a dog whom is proven, but just some dog you got that you like and think they'd make cute puppies with the mutt next door, now that is stupid. I'm not bashing shelter/rescue dogs at all, I've owned/fostered MANY myself! The average dog owner should not own an APBT, let alone breed.
Poor dog, paying for her owner's idiocy.

How many times have I seen posts on our Craigslist for pit bull puppies with all of these professed bloodlines, etc. and then "no papers" or...."but sire and dam aren't registered."

Don't get me started on "he's a nice lookin' dog" comment when people want to breed. My FIL picked up another male German Shepherd from who knows where (after his first one...and the two puppies "done went missin'.") The GSD is a conformational nightmare (gay tail, overbite, short legs, head looks like he could be a mixed breed - there's a difference between blocky and just square, one testicle, etc.) no registration papers, etc. but...."he's a good lookin' dog" so my FIL wants to breed him. I can't tell you how many times we have told him "please don't" and then told him why. His next question is always, "well doesn't your dog have papers? How come you're not breedin' him?" *sigh*

I'm a breed elitist, but I'm very much anti-breeding of any un-titled dog [and that doesn't include conformation...] No offense to anyone who breeds based on how well your dog does in conformation, I know a couple of you guys do who have GORGEOUS dogs! I just don't agree with it. Any 'pet' dog, I think, does not need to be bred. Ever. Unless a working dog is doing what it was bred to do and breeding that dog will directly benefit future working lines of the breed... there's absolutely no reason in my eyes to ever bring more animals onto this over crowded planet. Again, no offense to anyone, jmo :U

While I don't show conformation (and know you were probably speaking as a whole,) I know that I wasn't basing my assessment of my FIL's "new" dog based solely on how well it'd do in a conformation ring. Heck, most of the dogs I've seen win in GSD conformation shows make me gag. This dog's conformation is horrible in a way that would prevent it from actually working.

Reminds me of when I had to help my dairy buddy with a late term abortion on a jersey cow that got prego by a brahma bull. It was one of the worst things I've been involved in. He was sold the cow in a group and he had seen the bull in the yard when he picked them up....that guy was an idiot in the cattle world.

Uggghh!!! That poor dog!! I hope she survives, and I hope the idiot has learned his lesson on who ultimately "pays" when you try to "make some money" at the expense of your dog! :no2:

Oh yeah, American [conformation] shepherds are absolutely hideous beasts. GSD breeding as a whole needs to be put on halt until shepherd folk can get their shit together. I was lucky in that my GSD, even though she came from BYB's [never again! I was a stupid 12 year old when I asked my parents if we could get her...], she has pretty 'sound' conformation in comparison to slope-crouped dogs that I've seen. At least I doubt I'll have to worry about HD or anything.

  13. Dashy is safe with Atlanta Bully Rescue after her horrible ordeal. Luckily an awesome couple that adopted another dog from us have offered to foster her for a couple of nights starting tomorrow so she has a quiet place to recuperate. They have a finished basement with heat, so they can keep her away from their 2 dogs. I'm going to keep her tonight for observation since the surgery turned out to be so major. Her uterus was as big as football and full of brown brown fluid. I've never seen anything like it :( There is still a very big chance she might not make it because of her having the retained rotten puppy in her birth canal for 4 days, it's very likely she could go into septic shock. Her previous backyard breeder owner bred her (38 lbs) at a little over a year old with a 6 month old 75 lbs AmBully that is now 90 lbs. He couldn't afford to take her to the vet after he pulled 4 dead puppies from her on Saturday. ABR offered to pay for her spay and then after the vet and staff worked so hard to save her, he told us she would be going right back outside in the rain. There's no way she would have survived outside trying to recover from this surgery. He asked if there were any rescues that could take her. She is super sweet but in horrible shape. She's very emaciated. Her rib cage sticks out like nothing I've ever seen before. Luckily, despite her previous owner admitting she's never been on preventative, she is heartworm negative!

She is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, very petite and beautiful! After she recovers, she will go up for adoption.

Atlanta Bully Rescue had 3 dogs that had to go to the vet today including Dashy and 2 more have appointments tomorrow and we also had another dog spayed Monday. Any donations to help with the cost of our rescues' vet bills would be greatly appreciated, our paypal address is abrevents@gmail.com and our mailing address is Atlanta Bully Rescue, PO Box 17868, Atlanta, GA 30316. Even small amounts add up very quickly.

Have you ever mentioned to him that the fact that his dog only has 1 testicle means that there is still 1 inside his body that is very likely to develop cancer? Not to mention cryptorchidism is genetic, so he will likely produce pups with the condition as well. Nobody will want to give him squat to breed his genetic mess of a dog...the best option for his dog's health is to neuter him and get that retained testicle outta there!

  17. The 40 something year old guy tried to justify his actions by telling me it was his friend's idea and he told him that Dashy was so beautiful and she would make gorgeous pups with his big blue boy he just got. He was complaining because the male's owner was refusing to help with Dashy's situation. I wanted to laugh, he really thought another backyard breeder was going to help his bitch, especially when all the pups were stillborn and there was no money to be made? Dashy's surgery should have cost $600-$1,000+ if she hadn't gone through ABR. It irks me that this guy didn't have to pay a dime and now I'm the one that will be getting up every couple of hours tonight to take her temp and make sure she's okay. He kept justifying his actions and I had to bite my tongue so that he wouldn't change his mind about surrendering her. I didn't even get a thank you from this guy. But Dashy is certainly showing her appreciation. Her life just took a whole new route, even if she doesn't survive this, at least her last few days will be spent living the good life.

I understand your frustration, just remember its worth because she's with you and not with an idiot. And maybe this guy learned something and will think twice before he tries to breed another dog(probably not,but one can hope)

OMG op you are preaching to the choir

if you cant afford basic shots and spay/neuter, then you cant afford the damn dog!!!

both of my dogs came from BYB who wasnt even responsible enough to stop strays from getting to their females let alone producing dogs that are worth $100+!!!

thank god for rescues or all these dogs would be doomed

    RESCUE DOGS FOR THE WIN!!!
