I'm gonna choose the redtail boa, because we have 3 of them. They get bigger than the ball pythons but not as big as the retics or burmese, so they are still fairly manageable.

Here are the 3 we own:

    Zeus (albino)

    Layla (normal)

    Penelope (salmon het albino)

I really love corn snakes too.

Snakes I like to admire in their own habitat would definately be copperheads while they are sunning...so pretty.

Really! I've caught so many hognoses, I had no idea they were venomous. I probably would have been a lot more careful.

Good lord.....I'm just remembering one day where I had 2 in one hand and 1 in the other. God, I'm stupid. Are they known to be big biters?

No, they're very reluctant to bite. They have rear, recurved, grooved fangs. You'd have to get your hand or finger all the way in the back of their mouths to risk an envenomation. I've actually only heard of it happening one time with any kind of problem, and the guy was bitten during a feeding response. He let the snake chew on him for several minutes, and we semi-normal people wouldn't do that ;)
Good to know there are so many here, though! I'll keep an eye out for them. :D

That was in NY, though. I've never seen them here. But we do have lots of rat snakes here, and those are beautiful and a fun catch.

    So.....you're in FL now?

I know they're in south GA, and I'm pretty sure they range this far south. I'll check the range map as soon as I get all my books unpacked.
Yep. Moved to Tallahassee last week.

    Dammit!
    Now I want a hognose.

We'll see come spring when we have our basement rearranged.
Priorities for basement, though, are Stagger Lee's big boy enclosure, and more gecko racks for my breeding projects next year.
    THEN maybe a hognose.

We do have hognose here in Central/SW Florida. We just caught one a few weeks ago—just a baby. They're pretty awesome with their fake outs too!!! LOL They're cute little guys. Red rats (corn snakes) and yellow rats are fun too. Every once in a blue moon we see a coachwhip and rarely see is the indigo anymore.

Unfortunately, indigos are critically endangered throughout their entire range. I think it's illegal to even look at one cross eyed these days, and handling, catching, or killing will get you a one way ticket to jail. Damn shame, too. They're gorgeous animals and play a vital role in the environment. We used to catch them by the handfuls in Louisiana 30 years ago, now they're almost gone :(

Yes, Very UnFortunate, They eat Diamond Back Rattlers... and Yes, Very endangered!

My favorite snake is the Black Racers. Mainly because they eat pygmy rattle snakes. My side job involves doing yard work and unfortunately the area is almost infested with them. Luckily there are a lot more black racers around...I also, for a precaution, carry a machete with me while I work  just in case... I've only needed to use it once.

Do NOT Kill Black Racers, They are the Good Snakes!!!
