Service Dog Forum?

Hello, My name is Lynn Fisher... and yes, this is my first post on this forum. =)

I've had APBT and AST's for years and even worked with a rescue in my hometown, fostering the "hard to place" breeds they took in...

When younger, My husband and I both trained a dog to be our Emotional Support Partner in our home... And it was more than successful.... Now in my old age, I've a need for a service dog to be trained to go into public and work with me, and honestly, I am most comfortable with these breeds, and as I've recently met alot of people that have trained them as full Service dogs, I know it's very possible.

my question/suggestion is... Why not a Forum Section for Professional Trainers and Owner Trainers of Service dogs of these breeds to come together to discuss options and training and Service dog related issues associated with these breeds? I would find that most helpful. I have approximately 12 - 18 months to network and find a trainer that can evaluate and help me select a candidate for owner training in this area, and I'm looking for a safe environment to do this.

Thanks for listening.

Lynn

We get a handful of service dog posts as threads a year. And that's for actual service dogs not therapy dogs and ESA dogs. I don't think that's enough to warrant an entire subforum dedicated to just service dogs.

Agree with this though. I have trained one of ours as a certified autism psychiatric service animal for my daughter, but I think there were maybe two others on here that were training theirs while I was training mine, and they were training as an emotional support not psychiatric service animal.

Why 12-18 mos? What research have you done thus far? There are some great service animal support communities on Facebook. Perhaps try to find one that specializes in the type of services you need your dog to perform or that is focused in your local area. Good luck
