Rough night at work

So I work as a 911 dispatcher and I just took the worst call of my 20 year career. I know it may sound horrible but I have never taken a 911 call that shook me and I've been working here for 20 years! Honestly, that's probably nothing short of amazing but we're well trained and can compartmentalize well. Anyway, tonight I took a call for a mobile home on fire. The neighbor was calling it in and the house was well engulfed in flames. She reported that there were 2 adult dogs and 5-6puppies inside the residence and I could literally hear them screaming and crying in the background. That call shook my to my core hearing that. It literally broke my heart. Now I have to sit here for the rest of the night with that sound echoing in my head while all I want to do is go home and surround myself with my furbabies and snuggle them close. I pray for those dogs and hope they didn't suffer long.

I am so sorry, there is a point where your armor is penetrated and I understand why, in this case, it was.

Thank you all for your compassion! I debated whether to post anything or not, especially being so new to the group but in the end I think I just needed some empathetic 'shoulders'. It was horrible but getting home to my own three stooges and snuggling up in bed with them helped trememdously.

They look like very sweet dogs.

Thank you, they are. Nala my female pup is VERY naughty but also very sweet. Kaos, the male pup, is a total Mama's boy and Ciara, our eldest, is my third leg and bestest friend in the entire world. Even my hubs who trained and handled protection dogs has said he has never seen anything like the bond Ciara and I have. I love them to pieces!

I never had a bond with a dog like the one I have with Tonka either. I was very close to my Golden/Border Collie. But somehow I think that since We were both very ill it seems we bonded even closer. Then I had to give her so many baths with her deadly skin infection.

I am glad you posted in the first place; like I mentioned, there are times when something derails us and we need support - and that includes you, a first responder, IMHO. Sorrow over another beings pain and suffering is what makes us human.

Hugs to you and your cute trio!

@Nat Ursula I'm sorry to hear about all the illness you deal with :pensive: but glad to hear that you and Tonka have each other to help you through. Every dog-human bond is different but it is amazing just how strong certain bonds can be.

@Madeleinemom thank you so much for your support. We are often the "forgotten" first responders and the worst part is we often don't know how things end up. Unfortunately in this case I knew there was no way these poor dogs would survive the smoke let alone the fire and that was confirmed in the paper the next day. Just breaks your heart.
