RIP Oakley 2012-2013

My sweet boy Oakley passed away suddenly on July 3rd this year. He was my first dog, and a very special boy. I found out a week after I adopted him that he had a significant heart murmur. The rescue graciously covered the cost of 2 echos for him-one at 6 mo. and at 1yr. At the first echo they told me he was born with aortic stenosis, for which there is no cure, only med management. He was put on blood pressure reducing meds at about 6 months, and made great improvement by his 1 yr check up. However, his murmur was still at about a 5/6, and that level of AS does not have a good prognosis. He lived a short life (18 months), and was loved greatly for the time I had him (13 months). Every where we went we got compliments about how handsome he was...and he loved the attention-greeting everyone with a whole-body wiggle. July was the worst month of my life after losing him...I miss him so much. I hope he's running with endless energy now!

That is heartbreaking, so sorry for your loss. That is far too short a life but he got to spend most of it in a home and loved which is wonderful. RIP Oakley.

I'm sorry, take comfort knowing you were the right person for him and gave him as good of a life as he could have had. He was very lucky to find you.

Thanks everyone...it sure is hard. I have a new puppy now and I love him, but Oakley had a special place in my heart that will never be replaced.

Holy cow-that's awful. I'm terribly sorry for your loss and want to take the time to thank you for keeping Oakley after you knew of his prognosis-that took some guts!

Big hugs to you and your family!

Thanks, I actually had made the decision to give him back to the rescue, but changed my mind at the last minute-I already loved him, and I just couldn't do that to him. I never ever regretted my decision to keep him :)
