Rehoming fee

Discussion in 'Dog Debates' started by oklapitowner34, Jan 17, 2011.

  1. So what do you all think of these people that charge anywhere from $300 to $500 for a "rehoming fee" why wouldnt you just say "FOR SALE" lol it kinda irratates me.What is your opinion on this???

If you're referring to Craigslist, they say "rehoming fee" because you aren't allowed to sell animals on Craigslist. The rehoming fee is the loophole to getting their money.

I got two of my dogs off of CL. Piper was $50, Wilson was $200. I'd say $200 is my limit for a "rehoming fee" though.. any higher I think is silly for a dog without papers. And I only paid $200 for Wilson because I completely fell in love and knew he was special.
  4. ok and yes i was talking about cl and i didnt know that lol makes sense now

Any higher than free for a non papered dog off of there is ridiculous

Meh, worth it to me considering all that Wilson has accomplished in his life so far (CGC, TDI, will be doing some OB in the near future). Piper I gave them $50 for just to get her out of the roach infested house she was in.

That is not a rehoming fee, but someone trying to sell their dog off to someone who isn't aware.

I paid $100 for Lucy. But she also had her first round of shots, and came with a bag of food, and an insane amount of collars and toys. Considering what a great dog she is, it was worth it.

I don't know about that.If the people have put money into the pet, like recent shots/vetting for a rescued dog....i'd say anything under $100-$150 depending on circumstances,is acceptable. For a mixed breed or unpapered purebred puppy(8 weeks +) WITH shots and worming and vet exam($75 is max-covers vet care) is acceptable. If the pet is coming with a brand new crate and a ton of new toys, food, etc then yeah $150 is acceptable.(because its coming with a crate and toys, etc)For an older dog that doesn't come with anything,$75 is max for a rehoming fee.

When I take in dogs, I will put them on craigslist. I have them spayed/neutered, dewormed and vaccinated. Plus they are usually crate trained and semi-house trained by the time they are ready for adoption, lol. (Not that I would actually charge extra for that--just seems a bonus in my mind...since I'm the one that had to listen to them screeching for the first two weeks in the crate!)

I ask for $40 to $70 for the adoption fee, depending on what I had to have done with the dog. That doesn't nearly cover what I put into them, it just basically insures they are going to someone who might be more serious than the person who just wants a free puppy. Less 'spur of the moment'.

Still do a homecheck and a vet reference, but still.

I hate when people post litters of chihuahua puppies and ask for $300 'rehoming' fees, then say 'not up to date on shots or fixed'.

I think anything over $100 is too much off there.

I paid 0 for Spazz when I got her off CL, best little damn dog that ever came into my life!!!!!!! imo, it doesn't matter the cost to give a wonderful dog a home..however I feel diffrently about 'puppies' being solid for profit at 300 to 400 without papers nor without proper care. AKA BYB's and people who buy cheap pups and sell in the same place for triplethe amount

The most i've ever paid for an animal off of CL is $7.09. I paid that much for my Doberman. Brutus wasn't the dog I originally wanted from CL, I saw him later at the guy's house. He cost quite a bit.lol.

My cats were all free off of CL.

It's not just CL that people do that on, I have even seen "reputable" rescues that charge anywhere from $250-$500 for a mixed breed dog, yes I understand there are times when people have huge vet bills from dogs that require extensive care but that truly turns a lot of people off to rescues when they have to not only jump through hoops but also pay more for the dog than they would when they can go to a BYB and get one for half the price, now I'm not excusing this nor am I supporting BYBers but I do understand why some people do it, a lot of times they just don't understand the consequences of a poorly bred dog, especially when it is "PR UKC ... bloodlines, 2 champions in ped...", for one they don't mention that in order to get those 2 champs, they went back 10 generations and it's truly ignorance more so than anything I think.

I always enjoy the ones that go like this "Wonderful dog to good home.Must be gone by tomorrow nine am or will have to go to the pound. She is a great dog and we don't want her to get put to sleep, but we will have no choice if we don't get rid of her TONIGHT!! please don't let this happen to such a wonderful dog! I am asking a small rehoming fee of $200,this is really not much considering I paid $600 for her".

I mean really,It's so important to find a home for your dog to save it from the pound, but not as important as that $200.:no2:

Yeah, that's how I feel with both of my CL dogs. Both had their first set of shots, and Wilson had been dewormed (Piper, not so much..).

But I'm with you, they're both amazing dogs, well worth what I spent on them.

There's nothing wrong with that if you are trying to home a rescue or foster dog. But,if I were facing eviction (or whatever the circumstance may be) if I didn't get rid of my dog,I would certainly be more concerned about finding him a quality home than I would be about recouping my costs.

I paid $75 for Jersey off craigslist but she was fixed already and had some vet records as well. I wouldn't pay squat for a dog with no shots (with records) and intact. Hell you should be paying me to take a dog like that because it's going to cost me $400 at least to get that stuff done.
