So, I rescued a rat awhile ago...named him Splinter. I have since, upgraded his home, got him 2 cage mates and thought he was doing well. Yesterday however he literally attacked me.

I reached in to take the food bowl, no issues. I tried to put it back..full, he latched onto my hand with all four paws and bit me 3 times.
I am getting VERY aggrivated, the other 2 rats are docile and polite, just..not him.

Cull him. Grab him by neck and tail and pull HARD.

    Im tempted...
He makes it so ive nervous to reach in. Just don't wanna come off as an asshole for killing a small creature.

Have you tried putting the food bowl back in, after this happened to see what he does?

Yup...same thing...had husband run interferance luckily. When I filled it this morning he came to the door and all his fur was up again...he was an inch from my hand and the husband hit him with the spray bottle.

:( sigh. Sometimes you get rats like that. It probably could be worked on but it may take some time. I can ask some rat friends for advice or if you really are uncomfortable, maybe it is best to cull him.

I am still thinking on it...if he attacks me once more though..its die time. I can go purchase a rat that I can hand train that might like it better.

My sister had a very sweet rat named Rizzo when she was younger, nothing wrong with the rat at all, very friendly. One day she had him on her bed and out of no where he took a chunk out of her arm, which was so large she had to go to the emergency room to have it stitched up. Ten years later she still has a scar. He died not much long after, we assumed a brain tumor.

Your going to kill a rat because it bit you? Please don't....If you don't want him then give him to someone else! Could wear a glove or put the food bowl in with kitchen thongs.

It didn't just bite me..it literally clawed unto my hand, grabbed on a bit 3 times...Also..if you know how to read..I said "IF he bites me again its die time" not..im killing him now...

I understand and not trying to offend anyone. I just really do not feel it is right to kill a rat, and especially in this manner. And it is not even euthanasia (which is bad enough) but just killing it yourself, painfully??? Please try some other options if it bites again...Maybe you could find a rat rescue or something? Anything would be better.......

I would euth it..I didn't suggest the method.
Why bother im his 3rd home..hes an obvious asshole lol

I just do not think you should euthanize a healthy animal. Please look into other options. This is my opinion.

Im not even taking any actions yet.....im just venting about my rat being an ass. I am reserving action for if and when he shows his ugly side again.
There are plenty of more worthy animals that need rescuing..like dogs and cats..and people friendly things. If he is gonna be an asshole..im not wasting my time and effort sending him to a rescue..that is my opinion. No offense meant.

I googled rat rescue and tons of stuff came up. Could just be a phone call and they could come get him or something. I'd assume rat rescue is less complicated than pittie rescue :). There's also stuff online about training rats....saw this...Training shy or biting rats - Critter City

Hey there, one more thing. I have a friend who loves rats and has two. I could ask her is she'd take your rat (if you decide you don't want him anymore). What state are you in? Just trying to help :)

Dislocating a rats brain stem in the method I learned while working in a reptile store is a perfectly humane way to kill a rat. It dies instantly and rats as pets have a bad name there really is no room for bad tempered rats. But of course this is my opinion.
