I have often heard it used to describe APBTs that were under 40 pounds. People don't seem to know what a real pit bull (meaning APBT) is suppose to look like so when they see one under 40 pounds they get all "She's so small!"

I've also heard the term pocket bully which refers to a smaller (shorter) Am. Bully I think.

    Just my two cents.

I believe many times when you hear pocket pit it is an uneducated people who thinks a 'pit bull' that is actually average sized is smaller (because they think pit bulls are supposed to be big) is a pocket pit.

However, there is also a type of an Ambully called a pocket bully.

Some "pocket pits" ARE crossed with frenchies, and some are also crossed with Boston Terriers. When you see them there is absolutely NO mistaking their breed mix.

The guy I saw had what looked like a tiny pit...about 10 pounds MAYBE 15. It didnt seem to have BT or frenchie in it, I dunno what the hell it was but I was mortified.

I am trying to think what else it could have been crossed with, to this day it blows my mind.

I don't KNOW if it's mixed with a bosten, or french.

But it looks it to me?

It was reffered to as a "Pocket Pit"
which is why i asked the question

lol. I couldn't even begin to guess what's in that particular dog, but it's a mess for sure! When I have minute, I'll try to track down some pics of the frenchie and boston mixes I've seen.
Not all pocket pits or pocket bullies are bred using frenchies, bostons, and pugs, but I have seen a few.

Don't know about Pocket Pit, but the ABKC has a Pocket Bully standard. Go to American Bully Kennel Club - 2008 and click on "Breeds", then click on "Pocket Bully".

Thanks for the link! SHORTY BULLS is what I was thinking of. Google "shorty bull" images and you'll see the boston, pug, and frenchie influences all on the first page of images.

Here's the link to the main Shortybull registry BBCR They have a lot of information on there site about the breed. The ABKC also registers the Shortybull and has a couple pictures and a standard on their site.

Like mentioned, some uneducated people believe that if they have a "pit bull" under 45 lbs, it's a rarity and obviously something to be touted as "special". Truth is, 30 lbs is perfectly fine for an APBT and in no way is it some "prize".

And people breeding specifically for small dogs are no worse than those breeding for oversized ones. They are both ruining the breeds and dogs for financial gain.

Agreed. We get a lot of girls under 40 lbs in our rescue. I dont really use the term pocket pit, but I might, just to have people understand the size. I usually just call them itty bitty pitties b/c it is so "normal" for them to be much larger nowadays.

Which reminds me, I met a lady who had a rescued APBT that was a pretty good representative of the breed, nice and trim and healthy, but she calls it a great dane/pit mix. That dog doesnt look at all Dane to me, isnt even very tall! So I can only assume she thinks that all pit bulls are really wide and low to the ground and have humongous muscles. You cant talk someone out of what they think their dog is though, then they think you are an arrogant biotch.

Yep. I said that because 'pocket pit' is the term AC uses to desrcibe any pit bull mix about that size or under. Like everyone else has said, people seem to think of an American Bully when you say 'pit bull' so it's a way of describing their size.
