Question for breeders

Talking with a friend of mine. Said his male has attempted to breed 3 times-and each time puppies were born still born, all ecept one puppy. My question is he was told this is genetic...is that possible? for them to grow full term and in labor be still born? Male is huge 95 pounds, and im thinking maybe a small litter with big pups may be the cause? wondering if you guys heard of it being a genetic issue with dogs?! Can anything be done to prevent it other than just not breeding?

Like has been said above....a lot things can cause still born pups...i don't think you can pin point anyone thing !
D Breeding can be very rewarding but in general can be risky a business...you need to always be prepared for the worst......for me its a bit like walking in a mine Field ...things can come along and surprise you !
A friend of mine from the UK bred a litter a while ago he lost all 8 pups and the bitch at birth !:(

all these years of experience and no straight answers

hucklebut there is always a reason for still born pups if the bitch is carrying them full term.....the ONLY way to find out for definate is by bacterial examination and/or submitting tissue to a pathologist.....

you dont mention whether its happened 3 times to the same bitch....if it is then the sensible thing to do would be investigate why as it is unfair for a bitch to keep whelping litters of dead pups, something is obviously wrong.....finding out is very expensive......but i guess it must be worth putting some of those profits back into these little money machines !

thank you clueless!! a real friggin answer!!

i said it is NOT MY DOG! I told my friend I would ask around to some knowledgable people. I do not know all the info on his dog, but I think it was 3 different bitches. NOT MY DOG-NOT MY BREEDING-NOT MY PROBLEM. Asking for a friend. Call me a lier, I would tell you who it is if I wasnt worried about you running to them to run my name through the mud! I will pass on this info, thank you clueless!!

however, can the male himself be totally at fault, in any possible way?

If the male were carrying a serious genetic disorder that's being passed down to all the pups and they're being afflicted with it, then yes, but it's EXTREMELY unlikely. Find out if any of those bitches have had successful breedings to other males.

normal for a bull terrier bitch to be rather small, and im thinking of this guys dog is 95 whopper pounds and than if they arent doing enough breeding and there are only a few pups than that could happen, it would make sense, i need to get some more info from him tho.

Oh no, I said I would probably never do it but I am forced to agree with clueless.
I would do the investigation to see if the cause is treatable or if not treatable, who should be removed from your breeding program. Definitely not fair to put the bitch thru all that.
Where are those big profits everyone is talking about? How many litters must I breed to see myself to the positive column of the ledger?

Not everything has to do with weight! It would seem that you have a big dogs and heavy weight fixation.

You can mate two animals of any size.

I recommend a veterinarians opinion, the book "Successful Breeding and Health Management" by Margaret V. Root Kustritz and anything by Myra Savant Harris.
