So I took Meesha to her first vet appt yesterday. I just had to get heartworm checked and purchase preventative and he looked at her allergies.

Well the vet talked me into giving her ProHeart which is a 6 month injectable heartworm preventative. It was much more affordable and easier to remember. But when I did some researching when I got home, the things I saw really freaked me out. Dogs dying from the shot and it being taken off the market.

But I read a recent blog that did not seem biased and it said it was safe as long as the dog was not on certain medications and was not receiving any vaccines. It also looks like it only covers heartworms and hookworms.

So what are your thoughts?

I prefer giving as little poison to my dogs at once as possible. I was under the impression vets had to have you sign a waiver and do a blood test and no giving with shots or other meds, no on older dogs, etc. It is supposed to be safer now with the re-release after the first release killed a lot of dogs, I know people in other countries use it more but I won't use it.

I wouldnt use it. Firstly, for the amount of issues with the first release, and the fact that its more expensive than mine anyhow.

Obviously hind sight being 20/20 next time research FIRST!! Second of all the fact that you can't use it with vaccines would kill it for me. Why in the world would you not vaccinate your puppy?

Hm. This is something to think about. I was planning on getting the injection for Sunny in about two weeks.. Maybe I will go with the tablet form instead. I didn't even think about re-searching the shot.

You just aren't supposed to give it at the same time as vaccines. And yeahhh I know I know I trust vets too much... ha

We will probably go with tablets next time.
