Michelle Lee, Pregnant Woman, Kicked Out Of Roselle Bar

A bar in suburban Roselle could end up in a legal battle after forcing a woman to leave because she was eight months pregnant.

Michelle Lee, a 29-year-old Chicago native now living in Denver, came into town for a baby shower last week and her friends talked her into a night out afterward, ABC News reports.

Lee and her friends went to the Coach House in Roselle--about 30 miles northwest of Chicago--where she planned on drinking some water and having a slice of pizza, until a bouncer approached.

"He said to me, 'I have a personal question to ask you, are you pregnant?' I said yes. Then he said, 'I'm going to have to ask you to leave,'" Lee told ABC.

Lee told the Chicago Tribune she was only in the bar for 15 minutes before being asked to leave, and that the bouncer told her Coach House would be liable for her if she got hurt in the bar.

"There are certain things for which you are not able to discriminate against someone, and one is their gender," Ed Yohnka, an American Civil Liberties Union spokesman, told the Tribune. "And only women can have babies. You can't discriminate against a pregnant person."

Officials in Roselle said that Lee should not have been turned away, and Coach House employees refused to comment on the incident.

"That is not acceptable behavior," Terry O'Neill, the president of the National Organization for Women, told ABC News. "We live in a country where people feel increasingly empowered to make decisions for pregnant woman."

O'Neill said the bouncer should be fired and the bar should be sued for the incident. Lee is considering contacting a lawyer.

If there was a bar brawl and she got knocked down or hit with a projectile and she lost the baby do you really think the bar wouldn't be faced with a huge lawsuit? The bouncer would probrably be fired for allowing her to stay there after he saw that she was pregnant.

I'm sure I'll catch crap for this but oh well, how skanky to be eight months pregnant and be in a bar anyway.Surely they could have got pizza somewhere else.If I saw an obviously pregnant woman in a bar even if it was apparent that she wasn't drinking I would automatically think "Damn, that's wrong, she has no self respect and no respect for her child"

exactly,I dont blame them one bit.The woman shouldn't have wanted to go in there in the first place. The last bar brawl I was in (not in the brawl, just caught in the middle) was fucking brutal. There literally was not one single person in that bar who didn't get hit by another person or some sort of projectile. My friend and I caught the end of a cue stick across both our faces when a guy swung back to smack another guy with it.We had nothing to do with any of it,we were just trying to get out of there and we couldn't even get out until the police got it under control about thirty minutes after it started. The cops were doing just as much head busting as the drunks.I cant imagine if a pregnant woman was in there,it would have been really bad to say the least. Most of the time when shit starts to pop off like that, people just start swinging, they don't pay attention to who they're hitting.

Now really what good would it do to get that bouncer fired? What a Harpee this Terry, president of Woman's-(what the hell ever its called) organization seems to be.I'm a woman and these feminist organizations really piss me off. It's not the 50's,we are free to do anything a man does. And I don't see why this pregnant woman would want a bunch of dried up old shrews making a federal case out of her being a dumbass, just so they can promote their man hating agenda.I'm sure there might be some women on here who were alive when the whole woman's lib thing was relevant,And I do understand it was relevant and needed at one time,so please don't be offended by what I'm saying. In my generation it just seems like all these organizations are made up of a bunch of bitter women who really just hate men.

Wow, and I thought I was the ultra conservative one. The lady has the right to go into any establishment she pleases. IF she is NOT drinking, she should be left alone. I don't agree with selling some one alcohol if they are pregant however.
I am not saying she should be voted Mother of the Year for doing this, but she does have the right. I don't think she should have more rights to sue the bar than any body else in there either. She went in voluntarily.

the problem here, as I see it... is that we live in a sue happy society...
if anything happens, folks look for someone to sue....
if we could sue God for rain, or for the lack of rain we would...
how can we blame a bar for being paranoid and trying to protect themselves from what they perceive as the greater threat of being sued...
if she got drunk and had a car wreck on the way home, either she or the folks she hit would sue...
if she got drunk and fell down walking around in the place and lost the baby, the bar could be sued..... by her or the father of the baby...
now the bar is being sued because they took action to avoid being sued....
what is the old saying, damned if you do, damned if you don't
