I always liked them, even though they were target practice where I was raised.
Did you have them when the whole monkey pox thing was in full swing?

I love them, I always wanted one but for the time being, it's a bit to much work for me ^^
they would need an outdoor pen also, wich is kina "hard" to build as they are nasty lil diggers etc... but they are adorable and make the most funny noises!

one day I'll have some ^^

Yeah I had them during that hoopla and it was ridiculous (Considering it came from a Gambian rat, not a p-dog). It was either the state or the CDC that said prairie dogs couldn't leave the house except for vet visits (One of my males went everywhere with me), and we couldn't acquire any new ones.
  6. I had a rescued BTPD and he was a jerk! LOL Very cute, but if he wanted to do something you were NOT about to stop him without getting bit pretty good.

    He was stinky too.

I rescued him from a "Crazy, Lions, tigers and bears oh my" animal collector in WI. Had no idea what to do with a PD so I contacted a few rescues etc found out I guess they are illegal? unless proven captive bred? I dunno, anyways, he went to a wildlife center in SD.

I didn't know you could have a prairie dog as a pet.

I didn't know you could keep them as pets, but hey, Colorado has a PD Sanctuary. They're target practice in our neck of the woods though. Cute and all, but a hazard to cattle and horses with all the freakin holes they dig everywhere. It's hard to justify a cute and cuddly critter running around when you compare it to a horse or cow with a broken leg.

There was actually some question as to whether Gambians ever carried the virus, too. I'm still bummed they're on the ban list, probably forever, because I REALLY want one. A possum sized rat is just about the coolest thing ever.

Mine are incredibly social; my one male, Kai, even slept in the bed one night. They're smart too, and I'm definitely not a rodent person lol

They don't require as much work as most people think, but they are a little more demanding than the average rodent.

I've heard these guys are more personable than even dogs.
    They're SOOO CUTE!

Someone on my gecko forms owns one and went to have "him" neutered.
The vet did the procedure, but found the PD was actually a female.
    So, "He" was spayed.

I had two. Mad Max and Dakota. Both were wonderful pets. Dakota was 10 when he passed away. They weren't legal in the area where I live, but in a neighboring state. Mad Max chewed his way out of the box on the way home and hid under the passenger seat of the car. The car broke down, state trooper came to our aid, and I had to keep poking Max back under the car seat so he wouldn't be seen!
I loved the way they would "bark" at me when I walked through the door. Hated the way they dug up my carpet to shreds!
We've owned (over a long time period) 2 prarie dogs, two ferrets, used to breed hedgehogs, several reptiles, and over 14 species of parrot. I miss my prarie dogs the most. Love the pics!!

I lived with a couple that had these for a while. The worst animal attack I have ever personally had was from one of them. The Prairie dogs were very friendly with the family and even the family dogs. I was asked to take care of them while the family was away. When going to feed them one day Rover ran up the ramp and lunged onto my arm, sinking is teeth in an digging in all his claws. Instinctively I shook my arm to get him off and he fell onto my other arm, same game plan. I had several deep bites and lots of scratches; the scars are evident to this day. Now, they are cute, but once bitten (well, more than once) twice shy. I'll stick with my big scary pit bull....lol.
