Which do you think came first? Politics or religion?

I think in the beginning, they were one in the same....
your religion was your politics and your government...
only in the last thousand years or so, have they become separate issues...
lets face it, how long have people had a choice in what/who their government was... how long have leaders been selected without blood shed....

and in some parts of the world, it is still that way...

This was our topic of discussion in my World Religion class last night, and he told us it would be that ahead of time. And basically he said the same thing-they are so intertwined that they almost are the same thing. And he changed it from "politics" to "worldview". He said one determines the other and there is no telling which was first for you because of how closely related they are.

We knew ahead of time there was no right or wrong answer. Initially I was leaning towards the side of religion. I have to believe that...even with the evolution theory that something was awe inspiring. For cavemen, for monkeys...for whatever came before that.

But then my husband pointed out that before anyone could be inspired they had instincts and had to protect themselves. Living in groups, hunters, gatherers...those things had to come first otherwise people wouldn't have continued to survive. And with a group you want cohesion. And that means someone gives and someone takes. Compromise...and then of course from that comes politics-what's acceptable and what isn't.

But I think he agreed (as did I) that when it comes to worldview vs religion they are different (specifically), but they are also the same (generally).
