Great post. it's always irked me when people ask me what kind of pit bulls I have. Then get confused when I say I have two American Pit Bull Terriers one if Black one is red.
  3. i am not perfect and sometimes make spelling errors but education (teaching and learning) is the way to give our dogs the respect they deserve.

Where does the American Staffordshire Terrier fall in? Just a different breed among the bullies? I recognize that calling one a pit is slang, but is it also incorrect?

AmStaffs I always say are pit bulls under an alias LOL; they are considered a a different breed by most. Though some are Dual registered as APBTs and yes they are all "pit bull TYPE" breeds. Nothing was added to make the Amstaff they all come from APBTs but they were bred under a different standard and have a much tighter gene pool since their stud book in AKC was closed quite a long time ago. If you take a peek at the breed standrs you'll see what the main differences are; this will help:

Well, didn't everyone on here know that red-nose are smarter than the rest ? That's what I have heard repeatedly from a guy I know. I have tried to correct his view on that to no avail. Now, it's just funny each and every time I have to hear it. And by the way, the "gata mouf" comment was a winner !

It is sad that their is so much ignorance surrounding the breed even amongst their owners. So I'm glad that many seem to be on forums now asking questions and learning. Life is a never ending learning process...

Since there is so much opinion on this matter, we "newbies" should be forced to read this thread before typing our intro's.

    Now, I ask

Is it wrong of me to tell strangers that she is a Staffordshire Terrier?

I only say that to avoid the "they all turn on you" conversation. I'm less prone to kick people that way!

My vet told me that my rescue is a Staffordshire Terrier. But if we are going to be nit-picky here about what to call our dogs, then take into consideration that the APBT originated from the United Kingdom, and in the process of adding breed names to different dog types, Staffordshire Terrier was chosen first when they began being used in dog shows rather than the harsher sounding name of "pit bull". It wasn't until they came to America that we began calling them American Pit Bull Terriers, Pit Bull Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers as 3 separate breeds. At this point, they are different breeds because of certain blood lines. So, if my vet calls my dog a Staffordshire Terrier, then I will call her a Pit Bull but her official breed name will be a Staffordshire Terrier on forms, NOT an American Pit Bull Terrier.

This is also coming from someone who can't stand it when people write Pitt Bull, and I used to constantly correct an old friend who called them Pit BULLS, rather than PIT bulls (emphasizing the BULL rather than the PIT) because it annoyed the crap out of me.

When people try to have the "they'll turn on you" conversation with me, I ask them if THEY PERSONALLY have ever had a negative experience and when they say no (because they always do), I tell them to STFU and not believe everything they hear. I tell them that the media always needs a villain and when they don't have one, they create one. It usually shuts them up.

In my opinion, if she isn't an American Staffordshire Terrier and is an American Pit Bull terrier it is wrong to call her a different breed.

Honestly I welcome the ignorance and sly comments as a chance to educate them and if they are beyond help LOL then I also know when to just walk away as their stupidity does nothing to rain on my parade so to speak...

ROFL. Here in Memphis, that is exactly what those idiots sound like. Or "How big dat head?". I know I am new, but am I supposed to respond with a measurement? I know that question makes me sound ignorant, but I have never had anyone ask me about the size of my dog's head. Do I need to measure his pecker too?

awesome posts all, I enjoyed reading them. I am new to this forum, and i'm sure I will enjoy this place.
IMHO, pit or pitbull is just a blanket term used to describe any mixed breed dog that didnt find its' way into another classification by whomever happenned to be referring to it when filling out some form somewhere.
I have adopted more than one pitbull in the past that was in no way any pitbull breed, or even a bulldog at all, or a mix of, in any way.
When asked what breed my dog is, my response is always APBT. My APBT 'Bella' has her papers to prove her lineage, though if you ask Bella what breed she is, you'll likely get licked in the face.
I have been friends with many pitbull dogs through the years.. some of them had red noses, some had black ones, some were white colored some were tan or brindle with spots. My current best friend is a big Blue doggie, and that is her color not her breed. Breed really means little to me, unless I were looking to make puppies. A much more important important question to ask than what breed a dog is, would be 'Is your dog friendly? or Can I pet your puppy?'
I will post picture as soon as i figure out how to.
