Pit Bull pups with docked Tails?

Let's just say some people crop tails they aren't supposed to and they find people who don't know enough about the breed, and they buy into it.

I.e. My boyfriend's Sister in-law bought a Border Collie. She told me "Yeah, and the breeder already cropped her tail." From what I have seen, Border Collies' tails aren't supposed to be cropped, but find someone who doesn't know, and you can sell them anything.

Cropped tails in the APBT should only be for reasons already stated, broken tail, extreme happy tail, not just for looks.

I have a pup right now that might have to get his docked, but I'm really hoping to not have to go that route. His tail was apparently broken when he was very young, because I got him at eight weeks and it was already healed. It has a perfect "L" shape. I guess we'll see how it holds up to brush and dog boxes and the like. If it looks like it's gonna get broken again or turn into a happy tail nightmare I'd rather just have it come off. I debated doing it as soon as I got him but decided to wait and see how it went. I guess time will tell if it was the right choice.

there's a lot of folks (ignorant) who think docking pit bull tails is correct. There's even more (especially in rural areas) who will dock the tails of any and all pups regardless of breed or mix. It's just "the thing to do".

Was it x-rayed to see if it looked like a break?I know in Am Stafs we do see genetic kinks fairly often and they can vary from very mild to severe and anywhere from right up close to the body to the very tip of the tail .... you can see/feel them as soon as they are born....Carla

O LORDY!!!!!! They are APBT NOT Boxers or Rotties or Cockers... APBT HAVE FREAKIN TAILS DAMNIT!!!!! LOL. I used to fight with ppl about this shit alll the time! With my First Pit Bull everyone asking.. why didnt u get her tail docked or ears done... ughhhh... cause shes posed to have her TAIL... thats why. EDJUCATE!

You shouldve sent them a message asking why their tails were docked... lol.. if you really wanted the real answer of why they did it. NOw all the ppl with those pups.. THINK THAT THEY ARE NOT POSED TA HAVE TAILS..grrreat! haha.

I don't understand why it's such a big deal. If it's just a pet dog, not for show, you should dock the tail if you want it docked. My bully has a docked tail (not my doing) and I love it. No spills, no tail injuries, nobody getting whacked.
It doesn't affect her balance at all. She's very agile and can turn on a dime. She has to be, to keep up with my Doberman.

I wouldn't dock an APBT, but it doesn't bother me at all to see them docked. It's just a physical feature, like cropping the ears. It don't matter an inch to me.

I've seen it done around here. I'm not against docking, but I personally think it looks stupid on this breed. Makes them look like some kind of pointer mutts or something.

I'll be darned. Learn something new every day. His tail never did get x-rayed. They didn't notice it right away, but they said it was like that before the pups started moving around much. Have you heard of it causing any problems other than a crooked tail?

ive known a few of dogs with a kinked or broken tail (usually born kinked or mother broke it or in my case, my dog has a death wish) and it doesnt effect anything. doesnt get in the way of anything. she chews on it when shes bored out of her mind,(thats my bad, not hers) thats about it. and no need to xray a kinked or broken tail, they wont do anything with it unless you plan on taking out your paycheck for show reasons (but ADBA doesnt care)

My biggest concern is that the odd angle of it will lead to the tail rubbing on the sides of the dog box more than usual and make a sore on it. I don't THINK it's going to be a problem, but I guess time will tell once we start hauling him on hunts.

mine are crated alot along with being in dog boxes to shows. i guess it depends on the dog but mine doesnt rub it on anything.

When I got my APBT at 8 weeks, my brother's girlfriend actually told me I should get the tail docked so it wouldn't be whippy later (but not to crop the ears "because it leaves a bad impression"). Then, she also said I shouldn't spay her so I could breed her when she got old enough.
Funny thing is girl isn't stupid! Just uneducated. Of course, I politely told her my reasoning for why I would both leave her tail intact and not ever breed her.

I don't mind seeing pits with docked tails, and I actually think they look kind of neat, but I wouldn't do it myself unless I had a medical reason to simply because of the money involved and the fact it's unnecessary. Besides, Andie had the most adorable rat tail when she was a little puppy!

IF their tails were docked WHEN you rescued them.. or medical.. thats fine. If you are gna BUY a puppy (which i am pretty SURE that ANY REAL* good breeder <which their are few n far between>would NOT dock their tails) As for havin them done because they smack the shit outta u.. thats just sillyness!!! I dont have a prob. if i see it done.. But In my head i just think that its a major fault. I have a friend who has a PitBull type that was adopted and has a nubby...so if its done its done.. but if you buy/or get it done(for none medical).. well.. then youre the issue.LOL

I mind it HORRIBLY! Unless it has been done for a medical reason, there is no reason to dock the tail whatsoever!
