Opinions/Experience with Prednisone?

Our vet prescribed prednisone for our dog, Rambo, to help with a pretty severe allergic reaction (which we think was caused by food).
Rambo is on day 2 of the medication and he has been panting and at times he starts breathing pretty fast.
Has anybody else had experience with giving this to their pup?

I would call your Vet. Tonka has been on Prednisone. For over a year. Before that they would prescribe a higher dose every now and then. I never saw her react to it like that.

Effective but not something you want to use long term if avoidable.

Agreed that this is some serious stuff - having used it on several occasions and dogs, I have never seen a reaction like you describe.
    Please contact your vet.

Panting and thirst are side effects of pred, what kind of dose did they give him?

Thanks for the replies! Everything I found online said that panting IS a common side effect.
Luckily he hasn't been panting/breathing fast today-- I gave him only one pill today instead of two like the instructions say.
He is supposed to get two 20 MG pills for the first 3 days, so a total of 40 MG, and taper from there.
How much do you guys give your dogs?

Dosage goes by weight, and as with most medications, there is a range that is considered safe. I'm sure your vet knows what they're doing and will advise you of any concerns.

It's not for long term use. It's a bad drug. Too many side effects.

tonka's dose was only that high one time.

Not wholly a fan of prednisone but it is a necessary evil in many cases. I'd try to keep the dog on it the least amount of time as possible. Finding the underlying cause, rather that just treating the symptoms, is the goal.

I've used it many times and never had a problem. I've never used it long term though. 2 weeks tops.

Chiming in late, and I hope Rambo's off the pred and feeling better. Gave it to our dog in June and she exhibited panting for no reason, increased urination (a lot -- we had to take her out 6-8 times/day), thirst, and depression (she got really subdued, like she just didn't care). She was on a regimen with a front-load and taper. It helped her feel better but I would really hesitate to give it to her again unless we really had to.

Tonka has been on it for at least 1 1/2 yrs. it does really affect her personality.

Nothing wrong with Pred as long as it isn't used long term. As AGK stated.

Thanks! Rambo is all better, thank goodness. The prednisone really helped him but I seriously hope that I never have to give it to him again. He had a horrible reaction to one of Acana's new formulas.....his eyes swelled almost completely shut. =(

Poor guy, I'm glad he's feeling better now though. I've had to give it to a few dogs, including two in my avatar. It was for 2 weeks as you described. As unoriginal said, it's a neccasary evil for a severe allergic reaction to something. If they have to take it, I'm ok with it for the two weeks. The side effects were the same with my dogs, but to me it's not a big deal. It comes with the turf. Mine have bouts with allergies, one is usually on the Pred at least once a year, sometimes twice. I would/will use it again.

I've had to use it a couple times on dogs, with no side effects.
My dad used to take it for different reasons. We called it "his happy pills". It took away his pain, so he felt better and was in a better mood. Every time is was on it, he bought something large (truck, kitchen remodel, tractor implement, etc.)
When one of my dogs was on it, my sister joking told me not to let him buy a truck.

Same, never really noticed any side effects on any of my dogs.

We've used it on occasion - just a few days at a time - but never any side effects.
  20. I found this forum through Googling information about this drug. Considering it's still a popular result on Google I figured I would respond. I've read panting, heavy breathing, irritability, grumpiness, difference in sleep patterns, aggressiveness (from barking to actually going into psychosis from this drug), excess thirst, frequent urination, and increased appetite are only a few of the side effects from this drug. My vet has confirmed this information. My Bella was on it for two days and I called the prescribing vet as even the look in her eye was different. Took her off the medication immediately and I do not recommend it unless your dog is in a very serious situation and Benadryl doesn't relieve hives.
