for you history buffs, these guys, Johny and Jimmy are responsible for bringing you Elvis... they were very popular in their day and were scheduled to be on the Louisiana Hayride... someone else offered them more money on the same date, so they cancelled the hayride at the last minute and took the other gig... Elvis was a last minute replacement for them on the show, and the rest is history....

I've heard of them, I'm sure my husband knows a lot more about them. I was a pretty big rockabilly and physcobilly fan though, Reverand Horton Heat, Teddy Morgan, The Blasters, Sleepy La Beef, Robert Gordon..etc etc
    Good Times!

from what I have read, Obed, Sun records had already released "Thats Alright Mama" with Elvis and Elvis made his first appearance on the Hayride on 10/16/1954 which he was scheduled to do, due to the popularity of his first recording. Then on 11/06/1654 he signed a one year contract with the Hayride. Elvis had already debuted on the Grand Ole Opry a couple weeks prior to doing anything with the Hayride. At that time, was the Hayride the crew of " Grand Ole Opry" outcasts that it grew to be?

In my mind, the only person responsible responsible for bring this world Elvis was Sam Phillips.

Obed, that brought some of memories back. My mother was certified country. I don't recall Jimmy and Johnny. Ray Price Farron young and the young Willie Nelsonwere her faves among others. Any one remember when Willie looked and dressed as in this video?

you are quite correct in what you have read with some minor details that are skipped. The first appearance of Elvis on the show was scheduled on the date that Jimmy and Johhny cancelled. I was not trying to say that Elvis would not have made it without that appearance or that the duo had any direct involvement with the career of Elvis... just wonder how things would have been different for both them and Elvis had they not cancelled.
Johnny was quite a different kind of fellow, he did his own thing too many times and was way too concerned about having a good time and not concerned enough about his career, which is why he did not have one.
Jimmy and Johnny have a "cult" following in Germany and are very popular there... a few years back Johnny was interviewed by a German reporter and the reporter asked Johnny a question in which he referred to Johnny's career, Johnny being the honest person he was replied... "I never had a career, I just always did what I wanted to do"... Johnny left country music and became an Evangelist for a few years.. then quit that and became a talent scout for awhile... his children formed a gospel music group for a while and they too did not continue in music as a form of making a living.. Johnny eventually suffered a stroke and later died from complications of that stroke... not sure where all his family now lives... last I heard, some were in Marshall Texas and some were in TN.
Do not know what happened with Jimmy.

Jimmy died from cancer in 2004, Johnny suffered a stroke in 1999 and can no longer perform.

Johnny quit performing long before that.....
Last time I heard Johnny sing was at a mathis family re-union held at the Maud high school auditorium, back in... I think it was 1996...
The mathis family holds its family reunion there every year...
quite a few of the family play and sing, though mostly it is gospel music at the re-unions.. sometimes though they do country music in the evenings... they do gospel in the mornings.. if my memory serves me correctly...
I have only been to their reunions 3 times and johnny was there 2 of the times I was there... when I saw him in the 90's it was the first time I had seen him in 30 years, the last time before that was back in 1962 or 63...

as an added note, if you look at the back of a lot of old George Jones albums, you will see that Johnny wrote a lot of the music George recorded and also wrote some of the stuff Patsy Cline did... IMO, Johnny was a better song writer than singer...

I must stand corrected... I had heard that Johnny had died after his stroke, but that turns out not to be true...
he is in bad shape, but is alive and at home...
his wife takes care of him..
I recieved emails from his wife and his son after making an inquiry.
