Hey if someone could help me out, i don't have as good an eye for conformation as other people, but i am talking to someone else and they think the modern sharpei has a lot better structure than the traditional shar pei, and i am just curious as to what other people think!

I see a lot of bad angulation in the rear legs and not a lot of conformity but they're still good looking dogs.

I'm sure there are lovely ones out there, but like llasas I got bitten one too many times as a groomer to not be always a little wary.

You've groomed traditional shar-peis? I haven't even ever seen one!!!

At the vets office some of the shar peis were a bit iffy but i never met a traditional one so i can't comment on them

I groomed one regularly. What is called "bone mouth" as apposed to "meat mouth" meaning not so wrinkly and more traditional. I also groomed 2 "modern" shar peis. They all really wanted to bite me for looking at them. They did seem to love their owners though. Just not my preferred kind of dog. Ilike mushy dogs who love everyone best.

I like the 'bone mouth' type myself as far as looks go.

I feel that this is another breed that has been near ruined by people changing breed standards to suit the 'different' or 'unique' looks, without consideration for the overall health of the dog.

I've seen some terrible 'modern' day Shar Peis. Entropian issues, temperment issues, and skin issues up the yang...etc.

I'll never forget when we were prepping one for entropian surgery, and the doctor had to shave a patch on his leg for the IV...
his skin started OOZING this clear gel like sunstance, it was nuts. It was noted for us to never shave that breed for any reason unless otherwise noted lol.

i have never been a fan of Shar pei's, and i do not care for the "old style" look of those ones either-as stated above, many of them have very poor back ends
and a few have such terrible backends and shape i wouldnt be suprised if they had back troubles.
