New to the site need help with my 4 month puppy!!

Hey guys im new to the whole pitbull forum but i had so much success with the car forums that I thought i would give it a shot since the vet is as clueless as me lol. I've had a pitbull female named Pebbles for three years now and have never had a problem with her. i recently breed her and she only had two puppies. Wasabi and Broly. I'v had them for 4 months now and Broly recently started having diarrhea. I took him to the vet and they did a bunch of test that came back negative. They think he ate something that upset his stomach and gave him some medication for his stomach and for his poop but once his medication was finished he started having diarrhea again. I had him on 4health since i weaned him off his mother. I then switched him to taste of the wild HIGH PRAIRIE PUPPY FORMULA with Roasted Venison & Bison when i left the vet the first time but like i said the medication finished and still the same problem. I was wondering if anyone has gone through the same thing as me and has figured out what the cause is. He also has skin irritation and i have been giving him two oatmeal baths a week like the vet recommended. Nothing has changed.

Have you tried adding a few tablespoons of pumpkin puree to his meals? The added fiber often helps with the runs.

Did the switch in food coincide with the onset of symptoms, or did you switch when the symptoms started?

Does he vomit also?, how many cups does he get a day?

I switched when the symptom started and no vomiting!! He eats 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups in the afternoon.

That is a LOT of food for a 4 month puppy. My Great Dane got 4 cups a day at that age.

For skin irritation - did the vet do a scrape to rule out mange?

While food allergies are not as common as some think (only about 20% off allergic reactions tend to be to food) you might want to try him on a fish based protein food. I always fed Pacific Stream TOTW when my guys were on kibble. I'd also stop with the oatmeal shampoo. If your dog happens to have a grain allergy it will only make it worse.

Four cups is a lot for a 4 mo.old pup.I would cut back to 3 and see,over feeding can cause diarrhea.

Its what suggested for a 4 month puppy that weighs 40 pounds. The vet did do the scrape test on his tale and it came out negative. I have not tried the fish based protein. If I stop the oatmeal shampoo i still have to take him a bath twice a week so what do i substitute it for?

you can use white vinegar /water rinse to rinse him with. If youre up for ordering some decent shampoo, I could recommend Malaseb...its $20 good for skin issues.

I agree, my dog is 47lbs and she gets 2 cups of food a day... Shes on Blue buffalo Wilderness salmon ( sometimes bison). Good luck.

Have you had him tested for a possible food allergy. My bull terrier developed a rash, and I did a cheapo allergy test where they scrape the inside of her mouth and found several things she was allergic to (chicken, oat, banana, etc). I know the scraping of the mouth isn't the most accurate test, but it's at least affordable and gives you an idea of what he could be allergic to. Once we found out what she was allergic to, we cut that out of her diet and her rash got better. I eventually ended up making her food instead of buying the processed stuff and that completely rid her of her rash, her skin got so much better, and her coat was nice and shiny. That might be the culprit...

It may just be the result of a poor breeding. Your pup is 40lbs at 4 mos? That's huge. I think you are feeding way too much. Also remember to only do grain free treats if you suspect grain allergy

When a dog is overfed it will have the runs, my 10 month puppy gets 2.25 cups of food a day and she weighs 43 pounds.
