New Dane pull harness

Got my BDD harness yesterday, but I'm wondering if it fits correctly? If he walks with it on without any tension then the bar hits his hocks, but it's fine if there's weight attached. I wanted to get him used to wearing it by just dragging chain, but it hits him, so I don't know?

He's not going to be competing or pulling more than his own weight, so will it be okay? I've been waiting two months for it so I don't really want to send it back.

I am not to sure about that, I dont see why it would need to be returned though, just dont use a chain and attach a weight or wagon sled typed thing so its enough tension to keep it from hitting him?

    Nice choice in colors though!

That's what I'm thinking, but he's a flighty wuss so I know anything that makes noise behind him is going to spook him at first so I was hoping to ease into it with the chain dragging. Maybe I'll build a cart and see how it goes. I love the color combo :)

From what I've learned, it looks good to me.

You could start by dragging the chain in a grassy area and taking him across a driveway or something? Noise would be minimal and short enough to ease him into it?

Yea lol dont need a dog his size freaking out over a noise behind him lol I had a English Mastiff flip about a noise behind her when I was holding the lead :no2:

I would try the jug filled with rocks first, might help him not freak out so bad? Might be able to find a old radio flyer or something similar on CL or at a thrift shop typed place?

I think it fits okay... you want the bar to be close, because the more space between the body and the bar the more strain it takes to pull and it's a less efficient use of energy.

As for what to start him off with dragging... I'd start with tires on grass. No noise! You can get something light, like a small car or tractor tire and work your way up.

I wouldnt just hop up straight with a car or tractor tire for a dog who hasnt been exercised for pulling or used to the pulling yet, I think if anything maybe a bike tire, or scooter/motorcycle tire just to work up the strength.. Just my opinion...

This is why I am running Bear through a pre keep with lots of training for about 5-6 weeks to get him ready to start his pulling, and start pulling gallon jugs of water, then cheap weights from a used sporting good store, then start the tire pulling stuff and heavier things or heavier weights, but thats just MY idea and plan, plus Bear is young (not sue how old her dog is) and I am wanting to start him at a slow easy pace and probably not start getting into the heavier weights until mid to late this year, so he is closer to 2 years when he starts pulling large loads.

Also I was thinking about the wagon idea for myself and for ease and less noise seeing as we will probably be doing laps in my complex until I move and thats asphalt and concrete, because he is a "pit bull" typed dog I dont want people to see me dragging chains or heavy looking weights because you know how the general public thinks about stuff like that *sigh*

That's why I said small... I meant like a spare car tire (the teeny ones) or a tiny tractor tire... like from a riding lawn mower or something? Not a full size tire! lol

Oh see I thought you meant full sized car tire/with rim and full sized tractor tire LOL I was like even though he is a Dane thats heavy! :o

Sorry I misunderstood lol I think a donut wouldnt be alright to start with maybe, if the rim on its not to heavy, or if you can get the rim off.

Oh come on... make that Dane work for his food! :p LOL

To me, a "tire" is just the rubber.. stick a rim on it, then it's a "wheel" Gotta love amusing misunderstandings :p

Lol right, I wonder how much he would be able to pull if he was in serious competition?

Yea, that exactly what it is lol I dont know why I figured it was the whole thing, surprised I didint think you meant the whole car with how far off I went lol :no2:

We had a dane pull over 3,000 this week on a tough track. (And the harness looks good to me!)
