Im prolly gonna get crucified here due to all the nikon and canon fans.

I got an A57 last year and have been very happy with it. The 12 frames per second is really awesome.

Sony now has the A58 out and i think its In your 500 budget with an 18.55 kit lens included.

What's nice about Sony is that you can get some really nice minolta lenses at a decent price.

Is this the D-5000?
You should speak to an authorized Nikon repair center or contact 1800-645-6687(NIKON US). The cost of sending it in will be expensive so ask for the nearest repair center to you.
-Do you still have the same error message as your previous post? Have you tried these tips...
a.Have you checked your battery to make sure it's fully charged?
b.Make sure your lens is on properly- sometimes you might hit the release button and twist it a bit or the contact on your mount is off or dirty. (use lens cleaning fluid/kit only!!!)
c.Check the memory card and check the contacts. Use a different card if you have and format it.
-Do you have access to a battery grip? Attach the battery grip and see if the shutter release button on the battery grip will over-ride the error message. Go to a retailer and ask if they carry these. Here's what an aftermarket battery grip looks like. Do not do this if you have upgraded the firmware on your camera cause the battery grip doesn't work with firmware upgrades. Don't spend money on this if you're definite your camera is totalled.-->Nikon D5000 Battery Grip (Review) - YouTube

Out of curiosities sake.. What were their reasons for stating such?
Yes. What's the diagnosis of the camera?

Before you consider a new camera..."Are you invested in glass? Do you have lens for a particular mount i.e. Nikon?" If not, there's nothing wrong with a Sony. i would recommend you consider it too because unlike Nikon and Canon, Sony's entry DSLT has a built in AutoFocus motor which allows you to use older/cheaper "used/2nd hand" lens. You have a large selection of camera's to choose from if you're not already invested in the glass/lenses.

Good point about invested in nikon glass.

If not here's a example of the minolta glass prices.
50mm prime f1.7 is up to $150 for a prime condition lens.
70-210 f4 is about the same price.
These 2 are really nice. I've got these 2 and now Id like to get a wider angle prime because of the 1.5x crop factor.

I did send it to Nikon, apparently it could have been bumped, dropped, liquid got on it, could have been left out in the heat for too long, which doesn't make sense to me because I KNOW i never spilled anything on it and i know i never dropped it. I was in the middle of taking pictures with it working just fine when it decided to crap out on me!The last picture i took was very dark and not the full image that it should have been and than it would no longer take pictures. Nothing happened to it while i was taking those pictures either. I did change the memory card, and i cleaned the lens as well, i have to lenses and it gives me the error message with both lenses and even when there is no lens attached i will try charging the battery though and see if that changes anything and maybe i can try taking it apart i really don't have anything to loose now

Adjecyca, DON't take it apart yet! these cameras can take a lot of punishment. I kno for a fact they can with stand a fall down a flight of stair and be set on fire and continue shooting. If you want PM your serial no. and if possible the work order no. for the diagnostic from Nikon. I'll contact my Nikon tech rep and get you a real answer.

It's seems to be a problem in the mirror box, probably some lint blocking the mirror prism. I would go as far as doing a factory default setting by pressing the button near the memory card with a paper clip. You should also try flashing the firmware. just as well if the hot shoe for the flash got whacked it could be sending false info that you're trying to use a flash. This will also cause your mirror to delay (which is what happening).
Not the shutter button itself is the problem. I would do a full on test of all the mechanism before I would toss it. Worse comes to worse I can have my sales rep buy it from you so that you can get some trade in credit at my retailer. Don't take it apart ;D

Do you mean D5000? DSLR?

Have you tried turning Off the camera, take the battery and memory card out and then place it back in and turn the camera back on? Also, while the battery is out, make sure all the dials and switches are not in a half-position. If still getting error, try a factory reset. Check to make sure you're not in Live-View mode. ....

CES 2014 is in January where all the mid year prices will be revealed and the news of price drops.

As per my suggestion on your previous thread...
...also, Live View is the mode you need to take video...if you can record video, your camera is working fine..look for the malfunction..I wouldn't take "no" for an aswer. D5000 is a mid level DSLR and should be technically supported.
This from the D5000 Instruction Manual...
Framing Photographs in the Monitor

Follow the steps below to take photographs in live view.

1. Press the Lv button

The mirror will be raised and the view

through the lens will be displayed in the

camera monitor.

The subject will no longer

be visible in the viewfinder.

...on pg 41 of your Instruction Manual.

On the cusp of 2014 CES (consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas to officially let in event goers tomorrow morning, the latest news from the camera industry is that this year is going to produce less cameras, but more feature enriched models from key players. Analysts are saying some of the big players in the mirrorless market may be bowing out due to financial losses in this sector of the market. This is a big win for DSLR lovers, but a set back for the growing photography enthusiast that have been riding high on the mirrorless tech wave for the last few years.

What this means for you pet photography lovers of action shot is that most of the new models that will be released this year will be focusing on the quality of the image and not so much the speed of capturing the image as the mirrorless camera has cornered the market with their uber-fast auto focusing technologies. 2012-2013 was the year for speed for those in the market for used cameras.

This year’s announcements in time for the 2014 CES is as follows:

Liquid Image
announced a wearble camera that broadcast over V***zon line...like the GoPro Hero wasn't enough...this is live streaming.

Sony
A7 and A7R Full frame mirrorless

Samsung
NX30 Hi-end mirrorless
Galaxy Camera 2 social media adept camera

Polaroid (aka Sakar)
will introduce an "instant digital" camera...whatever that means?
Polaroid took a big hit when their latest model lost a copyright infringement suit Nikon's 1 system.
