Neo Mastiffs

Almost every breed has been going downhill because of the show ring and people wanting a more extreme dog. It seems like breeders pick whatever trait(s) they feel define their dogs and exaggerate them as much as possible.

I feel badly saying this, but I don't find the jowly Neo's attractive. All I can think of when I look at them is drool and slime.

show neos look like they are melting. :no2:

someone once described Cane Corsi as what the Neo was supposed to have been.

Yep, you can see it in pretty much every single breed from the English Bulldog to most, in not all, mastiff breeds, to the Shar-pei to the Dachshund.

They've all been purposefully bred based on specific traits, even if those traits make the dog useless for work. IMO, the APBT has survived in small circles (as I'm hopeful that other breeds have as well) and their extreme warped "new" breed was rightfully renamed something else, the American Bully.

As others have mentioned, it's the same thing for nearly all breeds at this point.

The neo's remind of the shar pei's horrible present look.

They use to look like this while bred in their origin of China.

compared to what they look like now in America.

Cian

Yep. Here's a great article on this: http://dogbehaviorscience.wordpress.com/2012/09/29/100-years-of-breed-improvement/

It's a bit disgusting what people have done to these dogs -

Which reminds me - today I was walking Cian (on leash) through the park and someone had this thing - one of those squatty bully breed mix things, with a head 5 times the size it should be for its body, sway back, down in the pasterns (face looked like an overgrown deformed English bulldog, but it had to be 100 pounds or so; probably the ugliest mix of breeds I've yet seen) - off leash and it came after Cian... fortunately, since both Cian and I could run faster than this thing waddling after us, I pulled him away and we didn't have a confrontation with it. Still, most people here in the netherlands think those things are 'pit bulls.' Also, most 'pit bull' owners here are apparently totally irresponsible, like whoever owned this beast today, so everyone here thinks all bully breed owners are criminals and all pit bulls are mean (at least that's what I've been told. I can say perceptions are much, much worse than back in the States). On the bright side, though I don't know what Cian really is as he's a rescue, no one here thinks twice about petting him or approaching him because he doesn't look like a 'pit bull' at all to them. Lol!

I just find the extra skin to be SOOOO excessive, I don't understand how it became that.. I understand slight exaggerations and 'enhancements' but...not to that extent.

It always starts out slight and then its taken to a whole new level because more must be better :no2:

The bulldog and pug have always had a very distinguishing look but it wasnt enough. They've become more stout and now their folds have gotten so bad it sometimes covers their noses. Shar peis and Chows sometimes have to have their eyelids tacked back. Basset hounds and dachshunds have gotten even shorter and longer. St Bernards have gotten more jowly and have a more distinct stop and droopy eyes. Speaking of stops, the pointer! Oh my, how they've changed. Bull terriers have gotten more round all over! GSDs backs and hindquarters drop more and more... how the hell that got started either I will never understand.

Like I said, they take whatever feature they feel makes their breed unique and amplify it for no reason other than to make it stand out in the crowd. Sooner or later it becomes the new trend and eventually it's the norm.

And wishfully, a new breed. Not the case most often though. :no2:
