My heart is broken

Wanted to post here where there are folks who would understand. I brought home George a year and 3 months ago. He was a street rescue and approximately 9 months old. A bully breed mix. Through much insight on this forum, he got crate trained. He had all the toys. He got obedience training. He became very attached to me and I to him. As he matured he began to show signs of dog aggression. Not surprising. But other than that he was a great dog.

About 4 months ago, my husband tried to wake me up, and George bit him. Not enough to break the skin, just on his hand. And George started showing aggression toward strangers. Not in the house so much, but when on walks in the neighborhood. We hired a behaviorist and worked with him for a couple months. Took him to the vet to make sure there was nothing physical going on. Things were going okay until George attacked my husband today. In the face. Drew blood. He has shown more aggression to everyone but me and my son. So it's time.

I love this dog to tears, and have done everything for him that I can, but we all need to do things we don't want to. I am just going to accept that this particular dog is wired wrong, and as much as I love him, he is a danger to the public and my family. We have a vet appointment this afternoon. I am crushed.

I am so sorry. There is just something medically wrong. We had our Boxer about that long and had to make that decision too. It took us a long time to get over the loss. He was a great dog.

I hope your husband is okay?

Yes, it didn't even need stitches. But the intent was still there.

Our dog lunged for a pet store worker's neck. She was measuring his neck size for a new collar. I stopped him in time. We had him from 8 wks to 2 yrs. it was the same thing that you are saying in that I started to notice changes about 6-8 wks prior to putting him to sleep.

It's a tough decision to make and I give you credit for it. Not allot of people do the right thing in that situation.

I'm so sorry to hear this. It is the right decision though try not to doubt yourself about that. It would only get worse and that wouldn't be fair to George.

I'm so sorry. I have been there and it is just heartbreaking. When your own family isn't safe you really don't have a choice. 7 years later my husband and I still get caught off guard by grief occasionally, but it does get better.
