Michael Vick, accused of dog fighting. What do you think for course of action?

    Here is an article from Espn.com

    Our confidential source said he's been involved in dogfighting for more than 30 years. He has trained and fought -- by his estimation -- about 2,000 pit bulls and was poised to tell "Outside the Lines" about the time in 2000 when his dog squared off against a dog owned by someone he referred to as one of the "heavyweights" of the dogfighting world: Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.

    "He's a pit bull fighter," the source said of Vick. "He's one of the ones that they call 'the big boys': that's who bets a large dollar. And they have the money to bet large money. As I'm talking about large money -- $30,000 to $40,000 -- even higher. He's one of the heavyweights."

    On April 25, authorities raided a house in Surry County, Va., owned by Vick and reportedly found -- among other things -- 66 dogs (most of which were pit bulls), a dog-fighting pit, bloodstained carpets and equipment commonly associated with dogfighting. Vick was not at the scene and denied knowledge of dogfighting at the property. To this point, no charges have been filed against him. But questions about Vick and his possible connection to dogfighting linger.

    This source -- who required anonymity as a condition of our interview -- has helped law enforcement by supplying information on dog fights that has led to dozens of felony arrests.

    "I've fought dogs, I pitted them, I bred them and I've done everything with them," said the source of his three decades in dogfighting. He then went on to describe the scene from that night seven years ago, as he took his 42-pound dog into the pit (the area dogs fight in) to face off against Vick's dog. He says Vick did not get into the pit but had a member of his entourage handle his dog while Vick placed bets with the 20 or so people in attendance.

    Michael Vick's role in dog fighting's hidden society and a look at why some athletes participate in the brutal and illegal activity are examined Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET on OTL.

    "Then he started, you know, waving money," the source said. "He was betting with everybody … He said he got $5,000. He said he's betting on his animal."

    Although the source said he doesn't know how much Vick bet that night, he does recall the matches' outcome: Vick's dog lost. He said Vick is known in the dogfighting community as "the man that comes with all the money" and his reputation is "[that] he brings a good dog and he's going to bet and he's going to bring a nice sum of cash."

    ESPN contacted Vick's agent, Joel Segal, who did not respond to the source's allegations.

    In the U.S., dogfighting is considered a felony in every state except Wyoming and Idaho. Despite that fact, according to The Humane Society, it's estimated that somewhere between 20,000-40,000 people in this country take part in this multibillion-dollar industry.

    "I believe that dogfighting is on the upswing," said John Goodwin, the deputy manager of the Animal Cruelty Campaign for The Humane Society.
    "And I believe that certain elements of the pop culture have glamorized dogfighting and glamorized big, tough pit bulls."

    American pit bull terriers account for 99 percent of the species involved in dogfighting, and a pit bull puppy can cost as much as $5,000. An average dog fight carries a $10,000 purse.

    So why would a professional athlete risk his reputation -- and a lifetime of financial security -- to do this?

    "For the thrill of it," said a member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame who asked not to be identified. "It's like gambling, no different than when Michael Jordan drops $100,000 on a hole of golf."

    This is just a small portion of what is going on around Michael Vick's name. He's also being accused of abusing the animals that would not fight for him (mainly puppies). This includes hanging them, drowning them, beating them, etc. Sources have detailed that he frequently hangs dogs by their necks from trees, holds them under water for prolonged periods of time and smashes their heads into sidewalks. One source even went so far as to detail him dragging unfightable dogs behind vehicle until they were dead.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I didn't originally read about this matter. I heard about it on the radio. Michael Vick is being indicted...and the radio personality had the audacity to say (rough quote) the following:
    "I don't think Michael Vick should be fined or serve jail time at all. They're just dogs. I mean, people breed them and they serve their purpose. Chihuahuas were made to be lap dogs, they do that. Pitbulls were bred to kill things, that's their purpose in life. Why punish a man who is helping a pitbull do his job? Serving jail time only punishes an innocent man".
    The other radio personalities quickly rebounded by mentioning the abuse of unfightable dogs.
    "Man, they're his dogs. If he wants to beat them, drown them...whatever. He can do whatever because he owns them! They are his property. Let him take care of it according to how he sees fit".
    I, among other listeners emailed in about this occurance (and this radio personality's opinion). Name has been changed to protect the idiot (herein, John). Here is what I wrote:
    "First off, fire John. Michael Vick is guilty of ANIMAL ABUSE. Through John's way of thinking, abuse to one's own property is okay. So, that is to say that those people who have children and beat then, drown them, hang them, drag them behind cars, etc...should do as they please because their children are their property. Same with the men who beat, drown and hang their wives...its okay because they're just property. Our society needs to set a standard of order and justice. Animal abuse is NOT okay. Dog fighting is a type of animal abuse. I, personally, think (enter Radio station's name here) should put John through one of the abovementioned abuses and see if he still feels the same way afterwards. I mean, afterall, John (as a radio personality under contract) is technically owned by (enter radio station's name here). After that, fire John".
    I personally feel Michael Vick should serve time. Not serve money to the court. Serve time. Real time. Real back breaking, out in the fields chipping boulders into pebbles jail time. It's about time that someone got what they deserved...not just "the common folk".
    Where do you stand?
    I think he's a loser and was trying to put some side money in his pocket. I mean it was his property and he don't know what's going on? Please!!! He should be banned from the football league, all his Nikes profits should be given to the humane society and he should pay a fine and go directly to jail. But he'll probably just get a pat on the back for another good play. hope the football league look at this long and hard.
    No matter how much I dislike someone, I believe in the whole "innocent until proven guilty" theory. I'm not going to sit here & pass judgement on someone when all I've read has been predominantly statements from PETA, the HSUS, & the largest hypocrite the APBT world has ever known-Diane Jessup.
    If we allow him, & all the other "dogfighters", to be guilty until proven innocent, then probably 3/4ths of this forum would be posting bond & awaiting charges just based on dogfighting paraphernalia charges.
    So hold off on hanging the rope, & let the hard evidence and a jury to the convicting.
    I also agree. We should wait till all the facts come out. Due process.
    Also yes we love our animals but they should never be compared to humans.
    And yes responsible owners pay for this. But believe me all the facts have not been released to the media.
    I guess that's fair enough.
    I dunno, when I saw the video of him standing in the ring, handling a fighting dog...I guess that did it for me.
    I do believe in innocence until being proven guilty. My above statements are made on the feeling that he is guilty. See previous statement.
    I have not seen such a video. Where can I find it to view it?
    The thing is, we need to let the courts handle it. For me, seeing me in my backyard with a break stick in my pocket watching 1 of my dogs work the springpole might do it for someone else. And then I'd be screwed.
    As it is, I cannot stand Michael Vick....I never had (especially being a Saints fan ;) ). And if the jury finds him guilty, I hope he rots.
    I will withhold judgement until a jury convicts him. But I gotta say, the evidence seems overwhelming......
    yup, being a Law Enforcement major here, first rule of thumb is "NEVER assume". so, until some tangible, first hand evidence is supplied, and imo, the most effective would be putting/placing him AT the scene of the crime, (yeah, that vid would be good to see), then all's anyone has is speculation, here-say, and after the fact evidence~all of which, so far are one person's word against another. The "reports" of the dog abuse disturb me GREATLY, and i pray to God that's not what went down, but our country IS founded on the principle of "innocent until proven guilty" so, until he is judged by a jury of his peers, i don't want to assume either. this entire case angers the hell out of me, due to its ramifications of what fellow "pit bull" owners may have to endure come the following months, and possibly years, but we will all have to wait and see until a verdict has been made. only Vick knows the real deal, and hopefully some savy lawyer will uncover that.
    I'm all for the innocent until proven guilty... but I can't stand Michael Vick, he was a decent guy in college and then he gets all this money handed to him and he turns into a thug all the sudden. So either he wasn't himself in college he was just a punk and was laying low untill he could get paid. But now he's just a jackass; flipping off fans, missing charity events, the whole Ron Mexico std thing which he settle out of court... which leads me to believe it was true! then you had the whole water bottle incident at the airport... and now the dog fighting. I hope he's banned without pay just like Pacman Jones, and if he is guilty I hope he gets some jail time.. he's a punk wannabe thug not to mention the most overrated footbll player EVER and needs to be taken down a few pegs. Anyway there's my rant....
I dont like the manner in which he carried it out. i think in the long run it is either going to hurt or help the cause. It will probably hurt cause you got people like Nancy GRACE getting on tv talking alot of mess and dont know what shes talking about....:mad::mad::mad:[IMG][IMG]
    My sense is he's guilty as hell ... but I do hope he gets a fair trial and the oputcome is not skewed in either direction (in his favor because he's a celebrity or against him because of the emotional impact of the alleged crimes). Now the emotional side of me says make him pay now; I would NOT be qualified to sit on that jury.
    IMO this is not a "blame the media" situation and it is much more than a PETA, HSUS, ASPCA, Nancy Grace etc. issue. Millions of Americans are just plain sick of this dog fighting shit and we are itching to see SOMEONE pay for it, hard, now. Like in the "bootie house" ... yeah :D
    Don't give up on me just yet, guys. I'm still looking for that video. I keep finding quips about stuff that "hasn't been released yet"...but I'm positive the split-second video I saw included the accused in a ring with two dogs fighting.
    and :lol: about Booty House.
