Letting your dog sleep with you?

Ever since I was very young, as long as I can remember, I've always let my dogs/family dogs sleep in my bed with me. Recently I've seen things online about how bad this is. Not that it's going to really change my opinion on things, but I just wanted to see what everyone had to say on the matter. I have a 12yo Black Lab x Greyhound that has slept next to me for many years now. I just recently got a Bully, and he sleeps with me as well. I don't see the problem in this, besides the dog hair, but that's a minor problem, and easily cleaned. Anyone else wanna share their opinion on the matter?

Do what you want to do. I let snow sleep with me most nights. But at the same time If I don't want her in the bed all I do is tell her to get off and she will happily sleep on the floor.

Same with my Bully, he only gets on the bed when I call him up, and will get down if I want him to. But my Lab is old, and I let her sleep there whenever she likes because she doesn't have a lot of time left, and I want her to be happy. For her, happy is just sleeping in my bed with me, so I can deal with her being there all the time..lol

The day you start believing everything you read online you're in serious trouble LOL. People that don't have any control of their dogs or have any knowledge of training may not want to do it. They should always wait till they are invited up on the bed, and when told to leave they go immediately. If those conditions can't be met, maybe you shouldn't do it.

1 or 2 sleep with me every night.

    Always have and always will.

Some nights I wish I hated them on my bed because I'm over the dirt particles.

I see no problem with it. If mine weren't such snugglers and didn't make me hot during the night, I might let them more often, lol.

Ha! I love them during the winter, I don't need blankets or heat with these two big dogs in my bed with me..lol

I can't imagine the point of having a dog if not to sleep with you; it's simply (for me) one of the main perks.

My main problem is that I would like for my dog to be at the top of the bed under the covers canoodling and Ms. independent "needs her space" so she prefers to sleep farther down the bed covered with her own blanket.

As has been said, you read allot on which stems from situations where the dog simply is not trained at all and the people completely clueless; and there is still allot of dominance theory advocates (despite that it has been completely de-bunked by current research) so there is allot of voodoo on the internet about not allowing dogs to walk through doorways first and spitting in their food and other seemingly weird and arbitrary things we should do to show our dogs we are boss.

Ew, no. None of my animals (this includes the cats) are even allowed in my bedroom LOL. Partially because Eric (fiance) has allergies, so our bedroom is considered the "clean" room. Also because I don't feel like sleeping in a bunch of dog hair/dirt/whatever else they have on them.

That being said, it's really not an issue unless you let your dog(s) be a brat about it. Your bed, your rules.

We don't let Trigger on the bed, first of all it is not roomy enough for all of us and we wouldn't get a good night's sleep, and second, I do enough laundry and would hate to have to clean the bed every day!

he has already become the resident couch potato and he will take whatever we let him take, and we put our foot down as far as bed privileges, BIG "no" for us.

I let mine sleep with me on a rotational basis. Sometimes one of them while the others are crated or sleeping on furniture, sometimes more than one of them sleeps with me, sometimes none of them do.

Heck when my husband starts snoring and I can't sleep in bed with him, I will usually be found on the downstairs couch with 1-3 dogs cuddling me so I don't feel lonely. Every once in a while, I will take the couch for myself so I can do nifty things like actually be able to turn over!

    LOL; love it MJ!!

But I have to say only once or twice did Veronica every reflexively stretch out all four feet right to my back and almost succeed in pushing me clean off the bed.

Sasha sleeps with us once in a while... even in a cal king, with the three of us its too crowded. I'm the one that gets smooshed by the bed hogs. And sleeping with two snorers is annoying. Most of the time I call her up early in the morning for snuggle time and get my beauty sleep peacefully!

If there was enough room in the bed, Sasha would sleep with us. Trouble slept at the end of our bed from the night we brought him home until the day he died. Sasha however takes up too much room and we literally wake up in pain in muscles we didn't even know we had. So I will let her up in the bed only in the mornings after my husband leaves for work (assuming I'm off).

My daughter keeps trying to bring her to her bed with her, but I'm not ready to allow that one yet.

Never growing up did a dog sleep in bed with me. When we got Peanut my husband said no dogs in bed..that night we got him he said okay he can sleep here because he is tiny still and i can keep an eye on him. Well, he has never slept a night out of bed even when we stay in hotels or camping Peanut is always sleeping right next to me. I wouldn't have it any other way, neither would my husband. He tells me now that he misses snuggling with Peanut.

Harley sleeps with us now and then but he's a major bed hog and we only have a queen so hubby and I end up practically falling off the edges while he's spread out in the middle and neither of us have the heart to kick him off in the middle of the night so we just say no from the start. When We get our Cal king bed then he will be allowed to sleep with us every night
