What do you know about them? Where can I get info on them? How hard are they to care for? Is it a reasonable pet for a 21 year old who is semi-responsible. She's never been irresponsible with a pet before...but she's 21 and was never a primary caregiver. My sister is getting one and I want to load her up with as much info as I can. I want to help her do this the right way. Today she intends to get a home for her pet...but not the pet yet. What are some must haves?

And what is the deal with food for these guys? I keep reading that they have hedgehog food but that most people feed a quality cat food...but from what I understand-they're insectivores. WTF, why doesn't their diet consist of bugs then?

    No one has anything? Odd.

I talked to my sister a bunch yesterday about this and based on what little I know I can tell she's done quite a bit of research. The reason she's buying the home and not the pet yet, is because she wants to go with responsible breeder, and not get one from a pet store to support the "mills". Her roommate has a dog and they have a plan for if the dog doesn't like the hedgie or if she is too interested in it. She plans on feeding it both cat food and insects-as well as veggies for treats.

I tried finding a forum for her but the ones I was able to find seemed outdated and not really useful.

Hedgehogs are definitely a reasonable pet for a responsible young adult. They aren't really "hard" pets to care for. PM me and I'll send you a link to the breeder we got Mr. Prickles from. Her website is fairly informative and she may be able to point you in the direction of a responsible hedgie breeder close to you.
