Just rescued an older female

I was given an older female who really has amazing conformation but is severely over weight and in horrible health. She has horrible teeth, very poor coat, calluses all over her body, fatty tumors ect. She is 4 years old, and I am going to do what I can to fix her up, starting her on fish oil, special lotion for her calluses and starting her on a raw diet asap. The deal that she would give her to me, is if I give her a puppy from her when she is to be bred, she is in no condition to be bred now, but possibly eventually. She wanted to sell her, but I convinced her to give her to me. She said she will give me her papers when I give her a puppy, she is supposed to be AKC so we will see. She doesn't want to keep the puppy, she wants to sell it. She told me the dog was dropped off to her by a friend 2 months ago and she was able to get the dog to gain weight, apparently she was very thin, im not sure how much of this I believe, but I am going to do what I can for her. She is sooo sweet, gets along with my dogs but I have my hands full getting this girl into decent shape. Her name is Honey, but I think I might change that if I can, I will post up pics of her tonight. She is bigger than my male, she is HUGE!

I don't understand. If the dog is in poor health coming from that person why would they drop off the dog on someone else so they can breed it? Not to judge the person who gave you the dog, but it sounds like they just want money and are not in the best interest of the dog or its breed which to me is what dog ownership and breeding should be about. If the dog couldn't gain weight why is she so over weight? That doesn't make any since one bit.

AKC or not, she may not be breed worthy. Sounds like the person wants to get a hold of some pups to sell or try and sell her and make some bucks. I hope you can nurse her back to health and all goes well for you and the dog! As soon as she gets on a correct diet and exercised I am sure she will get back into shape and health.

    Good luck!

i dont know, if her story is true she went from one POS home to another POS home with the girl who gave her to me. I just pulled 5 ticks off of her, now I need to watch out for tick fever and lime disease. Its so sad, she is so sweet and let me do whatever I wanted to her, she has lots of black pigmented spots on her when I gave her a bath, I gave her some flea and tick prevention right now, and I am going to clean her ears before bed, I just put her in her new crate with a blanky, this is probably the best treatment she has had in years, the girl told me she probably used to be an indoor dog because she would always try to go inside, but its very obvious this dog has been laying on nothing but concrete for a long long time. :(

Poor girl! I am glad she is in good hands now. As rare and expensive as BTs are, I can't believe someone would neglect one.

If it were me I wouldn't let that women or however the owner was have any pups or make any money off the dog. They obviously don't deserve it! I hope all is well with her and you are able to get her in good health.

PS: I just got my bed stolen by mine! LOL

I can just not give her a puppy, all she has is my name and number, but she doesn't have any of my information, or maybe I can just pay her off instead of giving her one, which I might end up prolly doing because this dog is no where near in breeding condition.

After you add up the vet bills and your time/money/energy to nurse the bitch back to health I wouldn't give her a dime!LOL But if you want to be nice about it, you could pay her off a little for the female and tell her no puppy.

Err that's true. Make up an excuses. Say the vet said she can't be bred for some genetic reason or some what.

Do you plan to keep her for yourself or re-home her?

I would like to keep her, but im a bit overwhelmed at the moment with 5 dogs, but I will see how things go, shes a real beautiful girl with such a nice personality, and shes really dog friendly, i told myself if she had dog aggression I wouldn't be able to keep her, but as of now, no dog aggression so far.

Good good! Hope all goes well. I am surprise she is so well manured for being neglected for so long. She must have a rock solid temperament!

she hasn't settled in yet, and her health might be suffering, so its hard to say that her temperament is how she is now, she would need some more time being evaluated before I could determine that.

I question her being 4 years old. Just from the pics, I'd put her at much older than that. Her teeth are dark and very worn. Get her in for a check up and an age estimate. Best of luck with her.

I dont believe so, just the lighting i think. Often times, a dog with poor care can age them fast, and they can appear older than they really are. The girl is insisting on her paperwork it says she is 4, so we will see.

I believe this dog may need more vet care than I can provide for her. I have contacted some bull terrier rescues, but if anyone else knows anything let me know, she has a limp when she walks, and she is in need of a dental cleaning bad, I need someone who has money, or a rescue, that can take care of her vet needs, because I dont have the funds to give her proper vet care. She may have arthritis, and some other things, if anyone knows of a rescue please let me know, I really dont want her to end up in a kennel situation, she deserves so much more than that, no aggression what so ever, no dog aggression at all.

Did you try to contact the BTCA rescue center? Do you have a local breed club? Vet care is very expensive, but I am sure you can find someone to help or take her in. After all everyone loves BTs!

I have contacted a few rescues, I think this dog needs blood work done, x rays, and a dental cleaning.

    ***update***

Honey went to the Saguaro state bull terrier club rescue with Kim Bell. There she will get all the vet care needed at an amazing price! Kim was very friendly and we chatted for a couple hours with another rescue member and talked dogs. She helped show me some stack training tips for Electra and told me she thinks I have a wonderful bitch for show, she wanted to take her home! She also told me Scarlett would be fantastic for show in the all breed categories because he bite is perfect and she is not over done! While Electra appears to have a bit of an over bite, it is said she will do good in the bull terrier ring for just bull terrier because its what they like profile wise. I am thrilled at meeting these two women and Honey is predicted to be 6 or 7 years old and will get the best vet care now!

Get her in for a check up, and have her spayed.... then when she doesn't get pregnant, you won't "owe" her a puppy... problem solved.
