So exciting! Do you do any dragging at home? I use a chain or tire, depending on the terrain.

we drag chain and a sled similar to the one in the pics at home, Joker also pulls an old truck tire but its too much weight for cali right now.

thanks everyone we practice inside twice a month and will eventually be pulling a cart to start prepping for competitions.

so it looks like we finally found a facility willing to let our club train and hold competitions at in the future im meeting the manager today and seeing the location. hopefully it works out for us apparently most dog friendly businesses don't like weight pull. people can be so judgemental.

Great! Yeah, judgmental people suck but you have to get used to it with weight pull :/

That's great that you have found a group to train with. It looks like the harnesses fit well, are you happy with them? I've never pulled on astroturf. Can the dogs dig their nails in as the weight gets heavy?
For Joker's sniffing, when I start teaching my dogs to pull, with just a little bit of chain for resistance, I would try to let them drop their head down into a relaxed position. If they sniffed, I would give a verbal correction, and then a little tug on the collar. Other than that, I tried not to use the collar at all. I wanted my dogs to learn that "work" meant walk forward, head down but not sniffing, walking (not running) in a straight line until I told them to stop. So the initial training was more like obedience than pulling.

thanks leslie, the astro turf was not great lol but its all we had at that location we just bought our carpet so we don't have to worry about the seams or it being soiled by previous users lol, I have been doing a lot of training outside and working on a leave it command to help him focus, I have been working with lighter weights for longer distance so we can get the form and commands down. I am very happy with the harness's they fit really well and the dogs are supper happy to wear them.

nice pics!!!! Definitely need to order me a sled, been alternating chains and a make-shift box sled for my girl. I need to look into locations locally to do this, for time being we go to a local highschool and work in the soccer field. Only backlash i've received is some non-sporty dog people, which is ok. I don't expect everyone to understand. Looking forward to seeing more pics of your dogs working

we had another practice on sunday joker was a bit off and took some convincing but we had a few more people attend and i think the extra noise got him a bit worked up. he pulled 60lbs on a drag sled(including the weight of the sled) and cali pulled 25lbs she did really well with all the noise and distraction. they are progressing nicely and seem to be more confident this time :) im proud of my pups
jokers first pull he was dragging 40 lbs
    [IMG]

still a bit insecure but willing to keep working
    [IMG]

something on the floor smelled amazing lol
    [IMG]

kinda blurry but he was more relaxed and happy to pull the 60 lbs :)

we had another practice a couple weeks ago and both dogs did really well they are getting more comfortable each time we do a practice... we had a a few more people come out and try the sport as well witch was great, we had around 25 dogs last practice lol and lots of different breeds lol, from Boston terriers to whippets and malinois lol it was great to see so many different people and dogs trying out the sport. some of the dogs didnt care for it but others really liked it so we will see how many come back next week. :)
