So you're positive it was him? Man, that's crazy. I have seen how bad rats can maul each other though.

I adopted this little lady today. Really didn't expect to.. but she needed me.

oh trust me they can kill each other with no blood, it happened when my ex had rats (yea I was miserable but man I loved them) we had a HUGE male cage with 5 males, took out one for a little while, think less than a day, when we put him back in there was a fight, we got them (just 2 were fighting the other 3 were avoiding hard core) separated within a minute, neither drew blood, but both ended up passing away within 24 hours, I think when the one hit the other (these were both full grown over a lb) he caused internal injuries and the other one was older so I think he might have hurt himself...don't know but man I really loved those 2...GAH I wish I wasn't allergic!

I'm sure he had something to do with it and I don't want to chance it. The fact that he bit me and has never really settled with the other 2 makes me think they fought and he caused him to have a heart attack or something from getting all worked up.

That's awful. I love rats to death but man -they're worse than bulldogs sometimes!
    Had any luck rehoming him?

Ya he went to a family friend who runs a pet store hes gonna try and socialize him and use him for birthday parties or just use him for breeding.
Now my male is all alone for 6 weeks until my breeder has her litter of dumbo rex :(

Aww thats so sad about your dumbo male :(

well, my female i got never had babies, it was odd though, because she got extremly fat, i mean HUGE her nipples swelled then POOF! she slowly began looseing the weight and went back to a leaner(not thin but normal sized) ratty so i moved her back in with the other girl again and they are doing good. i thought that MAYBE she gave birth and ate them all, but ive raised baby rats, and TONS of litters of baby hamsters- there is no mistaking the smell of a newborn litter, i can always smell the blood and after birth from across the room plus no signs of dampness in the nest or blood. canr ats have false pregnancies??

Rats can and do half false pregnancies.. I've also heard rats can 'reabsorb' their babies.
  8. xchairity_casex

I wonder if she re-absorbed them do to being so young and due to all her early stress.
shes much happier now though, she even runs to the front of the cage when i walk past beggin to come out and explore so im happy :)

    Aww! shes a cutie!

well i had one hell of a time a few days ago, while i was at my bfs house my mom called to say that the 2 girlies were out of the cage, she found one but couldnt find the other. so i rushed home and searched everywhere for her (my bedroom is the basement!) i couldnt find here anywhere so that night i bated paper bags with all sorts of goodies and sat up with most of the lights off lsitening for paper bag noises no avail checked each bag nothing had been touched. all that day i searched and all that night i searched while placing food everywhere. nothing the third day i noticed Cesar noseing under the basement steps and took a peek to find.....
a hole in the floor of the basement about 1 inch wide and 5 inches long and guess who was peeking out at me!
i sat up all that night trying to lure her out with food to no avail she can be a bit nippy when scared so i wasnt about to reach in!
the next night i took Winry and tied a string round her waist to help lure her out also again to no avail she acted more like a wild rat in her home and refused to do anything moret hen peek her head out.
i had a large fish net on the bottom step above the opening just waiting for her to scoot out far enough to catch her but thankfully i didnt have to as she climbed out and sat right in the fish net. once i scooped her up she acted like 'oh hey! i know you how ya been?" her nervous and wild act was gone and she is now thankfully back home and the hole has been patched up in the floor! how exciting!

I had and bred, loads of mice back in my childhood days, but I always longed to have a rat and still do!

I now have no males :(
The other passed away as well, I'm guessing from old age and being lonely.
I have 2 double Rex babies that were supposed to be coming Monday to be his new cage mates but he didn't make it that long.

can you guys teach rats tricks
  15. xchairity_casex

    xchairity_casex Good Dog

Awww RIP man ratty (sorry i always call my males men rats or man rattys)

yup, you can teach rats tricks, dont expect them to learn really complicated ones like dogs but you can teach them a few things, i knew someone who had a rat who could retrieve balls of paper, when i had my 15 all my males would come by name when out and about. couldnt do it with my females though, too many to teach

I have decided im going to start breeding rats. Im going to be breeding hand tamed pet rats as we had a total of 5 pet shops in the entire UP, one recently closed down, one had stopped selling live rats and only sells frozen feeders, one pet store only sells albino feeders who are alarge and extremly nervous, one pet store refuses to have rats in the store since one day i guess several escaped and went crazy breeding and they had to call in pest control to get em out, one pet store has closed down completly and the other one is allll the way across the upper penisula.

i do have alot of knowledge about rats, and ive decided im going to feed an all antural raw diet, no corn and rice and crap but fresh fruits, veggies, raw organic nuts and seeds and some raw meat and bones. and im heading to MN in febuary to get a few rats from a breeder down there.

question, how many cages would be good for small time breeding (im not breeding feeders) so far i have a large homemade entertainment center cage for males and im looking for a alrge entertainment center for females then i have 2 birthing tanks-one 20 gallon and one 30 gallon and 3 breeder cages which 2 are guinea pig cages and one is a large flight cage for birds.
good? i plan on having 6 girls for breeding and 4 males.

Well, you have to plan on the adults not getting along down the road, and the babies as well. This is where cheap plastic tubs come in handy! Easy to store and use.

Also, quarantine enclosures, for new or ill rats.

And you will need to have plenty of spare places to separate males from females as they hit 4-5 weeks, and also the separate them if they start fighting. The males, mostly.

It's gets expensive fast if you actually take good care of them, and don't use rat racks or something. Changing bedding just about every day - and walmart stopped carrying my aspen bedding!

Any particular kind you're thinking of breeding?

i really love merle and agoutis. and for bedding i use newspaper, i probably have a years worth right now! iget newspapers from everyone so ill get a huge stack every 3 days.

im planning on getting a few martian cages as i have a bunch of 10 gallon aquariums, but i dont like useing those for rats unless i absolutly need to.
and yes i DO plan on keeping everyone clean, healthy and happy, everynight everyone gets a turn to come out and play with me, i get boys out for an hour then girls for an hour.

I love those little agoutis too.

Planning on different fur or ear types?
I simply adore my old guys' disposition - and everything about how he looks. But he has recurring URI issues and had severe bumblefoot, and I don't want to chance passing something like that on. It's too sad to watch.
