Gah, your rats are so sweet. And good. Most of mine as just assholes.

I'm likely going to need a fair bit of advice when I start my project down the road - I've decided on black-eyed pointed rats, I don't know how long it will take ( I did find a breeder a few hours away who has worked with them and will be selling again this Summer) but that's what I really want to work on. Along with my variegated.

I want to put the BEW thing off - I am just not comfortable working with such a precarious color, and I'd like to look into importing some from AUS to start out if I do.

And oh my lord! This lady who I put a baby I was toying with the idea of keeping up for adoption for, has stood me up at least three times. Today was another, I texted her an hour before she was supposed to come and got no damn reply, I'm expecting her to text sometime tonight and ask if she can get her tomorrow. NOPE, I already have her a home with the girl who adopted her brother. That irks me so bad, she's my first official 'Do Not Adopt' list person.

Im not to familiar with dark eyed Siamese genes-the difference between the dark eyes and the red eyes Im unsure of.
    Siamese is H/H
Hopefully that breeder can give you some insight into the genes and get you started!

UGH!!! I cannot STAND when that happens!!!
Im glad you found the last baby a good home- and I don't blame you for putting her on your do not adopt list, that is the worst when they pull that.

From what I know, the dark-eyed gene is a separate gene that is just what it sounds like, and can pop up where it shouldn't (like Siamese, Himi, etc), and from my understanding is recessive, so I could breed a black-eyed siamese to a self rattie and then breed back to the siamese to end up with more black eyeds'. But, I'll be doing lots more research.

Would you mind if I linked to your rattery page from mine? I'm trying to make a list of reputable ratteries in other areas.

That would be pretty awesome genes to work with! I hope you can get some to get you started!

    Of course! go right ahead!

I am probably going to take Heat for this one- But after last night, i dont really care.

There is a girl with 8 rats who is an hour from me-apperantly thretening to turn them loose if someone didnt take them- our local shelter said they would take them- but needed someone to get them up to them.
Being so close i agreed and contacted her telling her i would come pick them up and bring them to the shelter.

She is 23 and pregnant and according to her totally poor.
She seemed normal enough when i first talked to her- calmed her fears and anxiety about her rats, letting her know they would be in good hands and would be alright that i could get them to the shelter.

She started asking me about myself, how many pets i had and about my own rats.
When i mentioned i had 2 dogs-she asked me what kind and ifthey were fixed, i told her Bull Terriers and said yes they were fixed. she says
"oh, because i want to breed my dog, my dog is a chihuahua, jack russell/ beagle mix"
i keep my mouth shut because i just wanted to get off the phone with her and go back to work.
Then she asks me how many rats i have- i tell her i am a breeder and she says
"oh good! i think you should breed my rats with your rats! they would like that"
(hers are all albino feeders and according to her skittish)
i try to tell her i am not going to do that as i am very picking about what i breed
"well i think you should-it would make them happy"
moving on she then asks me if i have any hamsters- i say no and she says
"well you can take mine-and you should buy him a friend because i think he is lonley"
    and also
"he bites alot-but you can hold him if you wear gloves"
(anyone who knows me knows i refuse to deal with anything that bites me)
i tell her i will take him and see what i can do (shelter)
we get off the phone and im thinking- "i will get them to me hten get them to the shelter wednesday"
tuesday she tries calling me all after noon- i dont answer because i was busy- she sends me about 12 text messages saying "hey answer your phone i have questions"
so, i call her back and tell her i will be out to pick them up at 9 am because i have work in the aftrnoon, she says that sucks because she is not a morning person, i appoligize.
she starts asking me, how much money i make, where i work, if i can afford vet care for my pets, where i live, what my cages are made out of, how big the cages are, where my bf works, etc.
i tell her yes my rats see a vet when they are sick and i tell her hers will too when i get them- then she says "they dont need to see a vet-but one of them has a broken finger and is lots of pain though"
so i say 'well, she wil see a vet for it tomorrow"
    she says
"also- my rats might get tumors"
(i am taking this to mean atleast one already has a tumor) i tell her its common and its alright.

its around 10m and i tell her i need to go to sleep, we get off the phone and suddenly she begins texting me
    "i got a question"
    "okay what?"
" can i vist them on there birthday?"
well, I dont think they will be here but whatever.
    "i say
    "i dont know"
    she says
"i want you to have a birthday party for them and i will make cake and you can have some too"
"i think you should keep them with your rats-it will make them happy, and hten i could vist them"
"whats that black thing in the picture you sent me?"
"where did you get that thing?"
"why do you have that thing?"
"can i ask you a question?"
"hey can you answer your phone?"
    "i have another question?"

ALL NIGHT LONG she texted me, she called me, i got NO sleep, this morning I made the decision to NOT go and get her rats- i feel kind of bad but i cant deal with this level of Crazy, I dont want her coming around my house to decide what is and is not good for her (my) rats, try bringing her dog around to be bred, expect me to pay 200+ dolalrs for a tumor removal surgery for her rats,to randomly bring new pets in that she wanted but couldnt afford for me to take care of or show up at my job or who knows-expect me to give her money- For all i know she might try giving me her baby after it is born to pay for or something.

I understand, she lovs her rats and wants a good home for them- got it, but she went from a little weird to downright stalkerish and pushy
"i think you should keep my rats so I can vist them"

I probably have about 12 dozen texts on my phone right now 9im afraid to check to be honest) not to mention my mom said she was calling all day while i was at work.

there were a few other people who were willing ot help- maybe they can go pick up her rats and be stalked.

I bought some rats about a week ago to practice barnhunt with lol. I've been trying to read up on their care but I wanted some input from you guys.....

Is sneezing always a sign of URI? Can it just be nervous behavior?
How much hope can I have at getting these girls actually wanting to come up to me? They don't like being touched as of right now.
  18. xchairity_casex

    xchairity_casex Good Dog

From my personal experience, Sneezing can be triggered by many things and is not really a concern to me unless their is noise coming directly from the lungs such as rattling, crackling, gasping, wheezing, etc.
MOST rats will get some mild sneezing when moved to new enviorment due to stress as well as new bacteria being introduced, but if they are healthy rats it generally clears up n its own within a few days and antibiotics are not needed.
Rats from pet stores however should be treated a bit differently because they are rarely bred to live very long or have very strong immune systems/lungs and very often the sneezing goes right into a URI and sometimes deeper into the lungs.

if it is just some light sneezing with no mucus discharge from eyes or nose right now, you can put off antibiotics, go out and purchase a 100% cacoa Baking bar (you can get them in the baking isle from Wal-mart for like 2$ from Ghiradelli chocolate company) this is pure Cacoa with no added sugar or fat.
Give them a paw sized bit each a day, you can also pick up some Echinacea and vitamin C tablets for humans to add to the water bottle. a 350 MG in an 8oz bottle is fine to allow to dissolve, however it does tend to muck of the bottle, so having a second bottle is a good idea. for Vitamin C half a 500 MG tablet in an 8oz bottle of water is fine.
I like to leave them in the water bottle for about 12 hours before changing water to fresh water to give them a chance to ingest some of the Echinacea and Vitamin C.

As for taming, I know a lot of people say to leave them alone for the first few days to let them adjust, I personally like to put newbies right in the middle of everything, I put the cage in my dinning room, lots of foot traffic, noise, smells, movement, etc. as long as there are 2+ rats, I also generally keep the cage pretty bare, as shy rats will use hiding as more of a crutch. Sounds very cruel, but so long as you are not tormenting them endlessly by touching or poking and prodeing them, they are fine. I have had more shy and nervous foster's turn into great handleable pets within weeks by taking away hiding places and putting htem in a high traffic part of the house, as well as feeding over the course of the day in small incriments as oppose to one large meal. this way you are always going over to offer food and be near the cage and talk to them. Once they are more comfortable about you being around the cage you can start handling them.
I do the same concept, I just reach in and pick them up, toss them into an over-sized sweat shirt hood or pocket and leave em there for several hours.
Be prepared for them to pee and poop the first few times. but it doesnt take long before they relax and get over the fear.

BUT, that is just me and the way I do thing's.

Thanks for the details! This is the first time I've bought pets and knew it was a bad descision but did it anyway. :/ I mean I'll make the most out of th e situation. I'm giving them the same nasty lab blocks they feed at work but I've been giving them leafy greens and some fruit too. "Sneezys" sneeze hasn't cleared up yet but I've noticed she only does it when shes uncomfortable. If I just sit back and observe shes quiet. When I mess with the cage at all she starts. And "Doc" does this head tilt thing that I wonder about. I hope its her just making an attempt to move her ears around and capture noise rather than a neurological thing.

I have them in a room isolated away from everyone and everything. Im kind od hesitant to move them anywhere else because the cats will be obsessed and the dogs too. Since I'm using them for Barnhunt, I don't want the dogs to lose interest by getting used to their smell either.

    This is them btw...
