Awww! Congratulations on a big pretty litter!!! when are you gonna try handling them? AHH you will so have to post pictures of them next week so I can see them when I get back!! I also noticed Luna has a nest of fleece-is that all that's available or did she choose that? I ask because in my birthing tubs I have a layer of fleece then newspaper underneath and my girls ALWAYS shove the fleece into a pile on the opposite side of the cage and just use newspapers, I cover the babies up in fleece, mom removes it!

She had that, carefresh, shredded paper, and just decided fleece was her thing.

I will probably try getting a gender count on them tonight or tomorrow. I had to handle one yesterday because Luna's dumb self pulled a piece of the tape off of the floor of the bin (to hold the box/nest in the corner) and one of them got way stuck to it. Warm veggie oil + Q-tips and he was fine. I'm glad she didn't freak out and try chewing him off of it!
It was a learning experience, it never occurred to me that with all the bedding available, she'd try to pull up tape that was flat on the floor.

I sure will! I'm about to go feed and check on her and them now.

Man they turned out pretty!! Mine will be going home after five weeks. So around the 20th.. Sorry if I forgot, but are you keeping any of them?

The person who borrowed Goose brought him back (and brought her friend who's adopter two babies to meet the parents and his new kids), and she didn't exaggerate a bit, he's nuts. :/ He goes from very friendly and licky, to bristled and hissing/growling, tail twitching and ready to attack with no warning and no trigger. I really don't see a lot of options for him. I know all of the rat people would suggest neutering - but realistically, I cannot spend $300-$400 on a rat for something that may not even work.

Awww, im so sorry-I wonder what happened that's so weird! But you gotta do what you've got to do. no, I wont be keeping any from this litter, I had hoped to keep the only male-but ever since I got back from OH he has been extremely skittish and wont even allow me to hold him. so I think im going to be retireing both mom and possible dad and to be honest, im not sure if im going to be able to rehome the little male-ive been trying and trying to handle him but he just wants nothing to do with it. his sisters are sweet as can be, LOVE being handled and exploreing-not at all shy or skittish, just him. that's the reason I did not post a photo of him-its too difficult to get one!

Well, he sort of mauled her a few times out of the blue - she adored him, she wanted to keep him. I know people say that it's a myth that males can change at 7-8 months and his their real temperament but I've seen it twice now and I'm starting to believe it. I'm really not happy about that litter of babies being adopted out to anyone knowing daddy is nuts.

    I'll post a video later..

That sucks! Maybe he can find a pet home that will be wiling to spend the extra time on taming him down?

Im sorry about Goose, that really stinks :( hopefully all the babies will take after mom and have no issues. I think im going to hang onto him for a while-not for breeding, but just to make sure this nervousness doesn't turn into fear biting, because I have been giving him a lot of extra attention, I put him in my pocket in the morning and he basically stays with me for several hours while I pet him, feed him and handle him and he still has not calmed in the least bit, ive also been using the same shirt so he becomes comfortable with it but no.

I put Goose down today. I did get more video and pictures showing the body language of an aggravated and aggressive rat, though, that I can share if others need it. And I got it by doing nothing out of the ordinary, I was calm as could be, just petting and very gently and supportively picking him up.
He was comfy and happy, munching on some diluted chunky peanut butter (after eating anything else he wanted) out in the sun while it was nice out today. He was my little buddy, it really sucks. But I could not interact with him in any way safely, couldn't clean his cage, could barely feed him without holding him back with something.

On a lighter note, all of my babies except a couple of boys are spoken for. I did not plan on breeding again anytime soon, but a friend of mine owns a rat from what I think is a pretty decent rattery, and she asked if I'd maybe want to pair her with Dirk before she gets too old. The rattery owner gave us the thumbs up so we will probably go ahead and do it. The doe in question is some shade of blue (can't tell too much from the pictures), velveteen dumbo and is really just gorgeous. But I'm considering it highly because she has very low incidence of tumors and resp. issues in her lines.

Im so sorry about Goose :( its hard putting them down-but sometimes their really are no other options. those are some very pretty rats! good luck! will you be taking your pick out of the babies born?

My little big man Clause it turning out to take alot after his father-he is becoming a sneaky lil escape artist
thankfully, he is only escaping so he can come and find someone to
pick him up and carry him about, but still- i have NO FRICKEN IDEA HOW HE HAS BEEN GETTING OUT!
the cage is tight wire mesh-no bars to squeeze thru
    all the doors seal tightly
and there is NO gaps or chew holes anywhere!
so ive no clue how he is getting out!!!
if i sit there and watch he doesn't escape, its just randomly i will go down to go to bed and out he
comes to follow me like "wait for me!"
if it wasn't for the dogs, i probably wouldn't care-he is too big for the cats to
go after-but I don't want the dogs to get any ideas while I don't notice, or at night-have him crawl into the crate and get attacked.
but the cage is too large to move it anywhere else in the house.
I wish I had a trail camera to set up and watch.

Yep, any I want from the litter, she only wants one if it happens. How many I take really depends on who gets adopted in the meantime - I have 10 fosters.
Or if I get another CN for the males. Which I plan on doing anyway.

Hmm... I found out how they were escaping by bringing something super stinky and tasty (I think it was just warm hotdogs) and waving it outside of the cage. He showed me right away how he was doing it. Are you sure that there are no areas where the mesh has come undone but goes back into place after he's out?
He sounds hilarious. But I would worry about the dogs too..

WHOO HOOO! thanks for the Tip! found how he was escaping-lil buggar pulled a nail out of the bottom corner-you couldn't tell because like you mentioned, it went back into place until he pulled it open.

Well we know he's a smart one! The escape artists usually are so smart. I'm glad you found out how he was doing it, though I'm sure he's bummed.

After going over my website yesterday, I think I need updated pictures, its just difficult with my camera because it does not do well in anything other then very very bright natural daylight. and although the rats room gets a good bit of daylight-its not bright enough :P so, later today ima gonna sit down fo a few hours and take some nice ones (or I will try atleast)

Too over-cast and dreary out to take decent photos today-which is hella frustrating :/ However, last week I moved the only boy from my surprise litter in the big cage with my adult males, and both yesterday morning and this morning he ran out to greet me hanging from the front of the cage just like everyone else waiting for breakfast!! and even had no problems swiping food out of my hand as if he has been doing it forever! so glad!! maybe he was just going thru a really weird fear stage or something, but im going to give him a few more weeks and try finding him a good home (considering he continues to make progress)

  17. Rattys.jpg I gotta get on here with some pics. We have been producing some CRAZY babies!

I know gerbils are a little different but probably the same social structure. So my boys have 2 gerbils...they are only about 9 months old or so. But one was found dead this morning (the living one was curled up to the deceased one :-() but they were both males. I've heard it wasn't good to add another gerbil..that they probably won't get along...thoughts?
