I got them Yesterday* oops. :P

Nope, they're a little nervous but they seem sweet and outgoing once they warm up. I'm trying to go with a Harry Potter theme with the rats, I know, I know.. lol
But if something else sticks I'll go with it.

And here's something I found out this morning that is bugging me very badly. I got Luna's sister along with them - she has a mass on her chest with either fluid or fat from her chin to underneath it. Is there ANY way to find out if diet caused this? Luna has barely had a sneeze. This rat feeds on a lot of rat food filled with whole corn and corn blocks, lots of sugars... She's bigger than Luna.
They were supposedly born in June, so they're about four months old.

Are you sure its not a abcess? that seems to be thee most common area for abcess's to pop up, both abcess's ive dealt with in rats were both in that area as well as most people I see who has rats with them. and they can get BIG real quick, my first rats abcess went from nothing to 50 cent piece sized in 2 days. an abcess is pretty easy to treat, a vet will break it open, clean it and offer antibiotics. an abcess is pretty squishy and moveable under the skin, a tumour is solid and hard and unmovable.

I didn't get to feel it well, she is not a happy girl, I don't think she's been handled. But I did feel a small lump in the center, I'll try to get a picture - it looks like she's a super fat rat from her chin to her elbows, but she's not. If it gets any bigger or doesn't go away she'll have to get checked out. I don't know how the breeder lady didn't notice, I hope she didn't at least, on purpose give me a rat needing imminent vet care/surgery possibly.

Here's my three little ones. This is the only litter where she's kept more than one baby. 1st litter she had 5 and didn't keep any, then she had 5 and kept 1 female and this litter she had 3 and kept all of them, but she has her daughter to help her out now so I think that made the difference. Dad sucks as a dad lol.

Well, i haven't gotten around to taking pictures (tomorrow i swear!!) but Mommy Ghost so far has NOT been a very good one-i think she has gotten a taste for her babies as i am down to four. when i found them in the big girls cage 2 died the first night i found them-one had a bloody mouth i attributed to falling off the top level to the bottom one-the other momma ate. then the little smallest boy simply disappeared (momma ate?) and tonight i go into check on everyone before bed and i find one of the little white ones also have vanished-no traces. mommas diet has been very good, i upped the protein a bit, and i have been supplementing with ensure, so im not sure as the babies have all been active, full tummies no complications or issues that im aware of. so, i think Ghost is going to be retired from my program-and i wont be keeping any of her offspring for breeding.

Yikes. That sucks, I know it happens but I get grossed out and pissed every time.. not much you can do about it at this point, though.. Maybe she'll keep them alive now that there's only a few. Which ones are still here? That just stinks, as there really isn't much you CAN do unless you having a willing doe nursing, Have you tried giving her raw meat, or do you think that might make it worse?

I don't know if I mentioned it on here. Luna is pregnant. They should be due in the middle of the month. Dirk/Luna, she's really a great girl, I have several homes lined up, but I plan on keeping the litter a bit longer than usual, or some of them, to decide wether or not to keep one or two.

Also, her sisters' lump and swelling has gone 95% away with no treatment, I just switched foods and have been palpating it every day and it's nearly gone. I finally got her introduced with the rest of the girls, she was such a butthead! She ran around ramming all of the others the first two times.. So I put her AND the baby possum girl in at the same time and there were no problems. Also, I put the baby spotty/BEW make in with Dirk and Neville and they did pretty well, Dirk is just overbearing with intros and wants to inspect every inch of the new ones and then force-cuddle.

And Goose has gotten very nasty unfortunately.. I truly was shocked, he was the sweetest guy out of that whole litter, but the lady who has him messaged me and said he's been biting her, he'll go from wrestling and playing and then apparently a switch goes off, she sent a picture of her foot he bit and it's nasty, two deep punctures. He got her two other times and it was the same damage. IF he comes back here he wont be leaving, she said she'll considered a neuter because she really likes him.

Can't wait for pictures! I'll try to get some today too.

unfortunatly i dont have any other females who are lactating to take them, otherwise i would try moving them out.
yep, with my nursing moms i always add some extra raw meat to the diet.
but i have been reading some people say TO add raw meat some say it causes them to eat there babies, so i dont know, who knows, maybe those babies were deformed inside or smothing?
or maybe she was jsut too young, i had my worries and wanted to wait till she was older
as she seemed to take longer to mature then my other girls.

CONGRATULATIONS on the pregnancy!!!! how wonderful!!!
is she showing yet? is she big or not so much? i hope you get a nice big healthy litter!
ill bet they are gonna be pretty babies <3
Thats really awsome her lump is shrinking! i wonder if it was an allergy to somthing, its rare but ive had 2 pets whos
    necks swelled due to allergys.
the first was one of my dogs, we thought she had an infection, but she was actually allergic to our
carpetting in the house-once we took her off it the swelling went down within a week without meds.
theo ther was a cat from a long long time ago, we dont know what she had an allergy to, and never realized it was one
untill after years later-we think it was due to the food.
her neck had swelled from ear to ear and was saggy like and went away after the bag of food was gone.

How old is goose? has he been around in heat females or has he mated? i have heard that sometimes
males can get pretty nasty when they live near females in heat and dont get to mate and also sometimes when they
do get to mate they become like cocky big shots.
my first boy was like that- sweet as could be, till the girls started going into heat around his cage, try to reach in and he'd bristle up and
butt bump me and i was afraid eventually he was going to bite me so he went because i wouldnt even appraoch his cage without him getting defensive.

The white male of my rescue boys passed away, he started getting sniffly again
and the next morning i found him curled up dead, so i started the other two boys on
vitamins in the food and water-i hope they dont get sick again.
they are so sweet, the blue boy went from the shyest to one of the calmest.
while taking pictures i started rubbing behind hte black hood boy and he jsut LOVED it
almost fell asleep and started bruxing, such a sweetie.

    and the babies
theres 3 girls one boy left.
i have to say this litter is SUPER licky and bruxy
im goingto have a hard time not keeping any thats for sure

Well I sure hope she's done eating them now. Gosh they're cute.. do the dumbo ears help you narrow down who the dad might be any? Is the white one a pointed baby?

Aww, that's sad. At the very least e had it great in the end

She is showing a bit as you saw in the FB picture, enough that I'm fairly comfortable saying she's pregnant. I'm not posting anything on it elsewhere until they're delivered and confirmed healthy because so many people said they want a Dirk or Luna baby I don't want them jumping until I'm sure all is well.

Goose is 7 months -I actually thought that might be it, he was mated a few times there, and as far as I know in the same room as the girls which is why we discussed neutering if she wants to, it's $350 or more here to neuter a rat. But, regardless, my plans for him aren't going to happen, which is fine. I'm just doing my best to not deal with rats who have any aggression. Dirk couldn't care less who is in heat, he's just more licky and goofy.

Im fairly positive the daddy is Denny due to the baby with the mask as well as the only boy.
this is Denny as a baby>>
this is Dennys son (who ive kept) Badger>>>
this is dennys other son (kept) Bandit>>
and his daughter ive kept Pia>>>
    and then this suprise litter
i know what you mean about not dealing with aggression-i wont either, i wont tolorate it
i wont even use babies from a maternally aggressive female because...i just dont like it!
  17. Poisoned

    Poisoned GRCH Dog

He's a cutie! His son looks a lot like the female I was going to get.

That's why I picked the little dumbos I just got. Their momma has NO maternal aggression and the sire is apparently very mellow and also has no aggression. I will not be getting a baby from the Goose breeding, as the doe is apparently quick to lash out (recently ripped a baby's eye out during intros).
So far Luna is very sweet, a little squeaky but not different. I don't think I'm going to have any issues with her, I hope not at least.
  18. xchairity_casex

    xchairity_casex Good Dog

yikes! yeah, I wouldn't take a baby from that breeding either. luna sounds like a such a cutie! the other wedge blazed agouti in my last litter was a sweet squeaky girl, everytime I picked her up or touched her she would squeak-but she was never nervous or fearful, just a talker! her new owner is a repeat buyer and tells me she is still a squeeker!

    Okay, I can breath! :whew:

Luna started having her babies this morning, she was acting pretty much normal, I opened the tub up and checked her out when she didn't immediately run out for treats, but she did come out and grab a string bean and some chicken and I heard little eeps in the nest! LOL Mid-labor and she's friendly as ever and snacking. I of course left her alone as soon as I figured that out, I just checked on her now and it looks like 14 little babies, milk bands, no injuries. She did wonderful and is taking great care of them. Fingers crossed that it continues.

She was totally relaxed so I snapped a few pics, but I can't upload til this evening.
