It looks like mange to me as well, as well as whatever other injuries the dog had to tolerate

Ya, I mean you can tell that s/he was in a fight or someone absolutely tortured her/him, because I it "appears" to have missing parts of the lip and ears....sad....very sad....

    PNWPBR Good Dog

You are seeing that correctly, one of the ears is barely getting any blood supply and whether it will stay is a question and yes, a big chunk of his lip is missing. :(

I saw this dog the day he arrived at the shelter. I see where the photos can look like mange, but when he came in, that area under his neck was all swollen, and fresh lacerations covered his entire front half of his body. All of the scabby stuff you see in the photos happened during the few days that passed from the time he came in. When he arrived, his face was swollen and distorted, his neck was swollen enough that it looked like a football was inside. His shoulders were very swollen as well - all from the immense number of lacerations all over him. In fact, his face was SO swollen that I did not even know he had a large piece of lip missing until I viewed Ellena's pictures, even though I had opened his mouth with my hands the day he came in, to help administer his meds. The only puss he had that day was on the worse laceration over one ear. The only hair loss on his body is where he was shaved by the Vet. The rest of his body has all of its hair, his feet are not red or swollen like you often see in dogs with mange.

Well Like I said in previous post it is a picture and not in person. Well I am glad that it isnt mange. He does not need that along with his wounds. From the looks of the pictures it look similar to the numerous dogs I have seen with full blown demodex. But again it is a picture and you have put your hands on the dog and know first hand.

That actually looks ( To my untrained eye ) like a skin condition. Exasperated or caused by the possible fight. The puss will remove clumps of hair. The good thing that I noticed ( If there is one ) , was the multiple marks. Punctures perhaps, but superficial at best.

Other breeds tend to bite, and bite, and bite , while the APBT , will hold , shake , and tear out plugs / chunks. No evidence of chunks missing , which is good. The eyes appears intact from what I saw in the photos.

I didn't notice swelling , which suggest that it has went down after treatment ( Dextamethasone / azium , penacillin , or amoxijet ). If those treatments ( anti inflamatory , infection ) weren't administered , and absent open wounds , I wouldn't suspect fighting as a cause , but would still suggest cruelty for the lack of medical attention.

( Of course the swelling, fresh lacerations { especially lip & ear } , were noted upon arrival, which leans toward fight injuries.)

If the person didn't have money for a vet , or there was no free / reduced vet care available for the skin condition , I would consider leniancy. If that is fight damage, I would slap FiiYyyaaHHh!!! , out of the owner.

If it was a fight, then the dog looks like he be ok with the right meds and 2 weeks time. Either way , it's a freakin' shame!

Accidental fights do not go on that long unless they are unattended.

P.S. Keep us updated on his condition & the investigation.

Thats why I posted what I know, to give a bit more perspective on what is going on with this dog. I have been too busy up until now to chime in, or would have sooner.

This is certainly the outcome of this dog being in a fight. Sadly, I have seen Pit Bull dogs after fights before, and his wounds, when I saw him the first time, were indicative of a fight. As the photos show, the wounds are most concentrated on the neck and ears (especially the left ear). He also has at least one broken tooth, and the break did not appear to be fresh, although I did not hold his mouth open for long, since he was in so much discomfort. MOST of the lacerations are not deep. But the one on the top of his head, on his left ear, is pretty darn bad, as is the missing piece of lip (although when I saw him a couple of days after these pictures, that wound did look better!)

I do believe there might be an update on him soon (within a few days) though, so think healing thoughs!
