Ok, my 8 year old has 2 hermet crabs.. I got them awhile back from a co-worker and so far so good.. but.. we are having a tiny problem.. they are getting too big for their shells.. so I purchased several (7-8) differant size/shape ones for them to transfer to.. its been a month (almost 2) and they still have not tranfered.. did I do something wrong with the new shells (I boiled them before putting them in the tank like the websites said to do) and I have left them alone.. or are they ok not transfering and will when they are ready??

Also, when we got them from my co-worker, she was feeding them infant cereal (the plain jane rice kind).. I have read that they can eat anything except peanut butter... so.. I have left that alone.. IS that ok for them to eat or should I change their food..? (they have been eating it for 8-9 months now and are still alive)..

and for you lovers.. heres a picture.

the green one in the upper right corner is one, and the blue spot on the bottom middle is one.. this is the tank before I put the shells in..

Ek-I loved Hermit Crabs-until we had one-I think my son got it from the flea market or something. Anyways, he too got too big for his shell so I bought a few other shells to put in there. he came out of his shell but never went into another shell. They are gross looking outta their shell. But I still like them.

Try other things to feed them every once in a while like fruit and veggies.

Rice cearal isnt a complete diet they are omnivores/scavangers there diet has meat in it as well. try getting some herit crab pellets, sun dreid baby shrimp and algea waffers from the fish section at wal-mart they will love it! fresh fruits and veggies are also greatly appeciated. as far as shells go some hermits prefer a certian type of shell some hermits will only use the sprial kind that spiral out sideways while others prefer the kind that they climb in underneath. try matching your hrmits shells that they have now find the same shapes and try those if you hat already. sometimes they just need some time to investagate them try taking alittle piece of fresh fruit and putting it besids the new shells or even put a bit into the opening of the new shell just before turning out the lights this will hel encourage them to investagate them.

    Crab advice

*Great* Advice from XCharity! I agree that crabs have a perferred type of shell. Do you know the species? If they are Purple Pinchers then most likely they will want an O shape opening on the shell. Turbo shells are the kind they really go for. I would give them a good selection of shells w/ some the same size & some shells larger than what they are in now.
If given the choice, hermit crabs rarely will eat the same food 2 days in a row. So I would def. give them variety. Cut up friuts & veggies are great, and when you are cooking chicken, beef or fish -take a tiny bit out before adding seasoning, and break it up for them (you can freeze extra meat for later). Also, boilled eggs are good for them just crush the egg with the shell and serve. You can also go in the fish food section, and buy the jars of freeze dried shrimp, bloodworms & krill for them- they will go nuts for that! They will eat almost anything, but avoid onions, & foods w/ table salt.
There is a really great online crab food store, the prices are really good & you get tons of samples with every order, it makes dinner time a lot easier. Let me know if you would like the info. I'd be more than happy to pass it on:)
