I volunteer at the greater birmingham humane society and have noticed a high rate of pitbull mixes that come into the shelter on a daily basis. I wanted to post one of the sweet gals photos I walked earlier today. If you or anyone can help in the alabama region, she would make a good pet. I have seen too many get euthanized and am wanting to do all in my power to get the word out.
    Her name is Champagne. .

Yah, she doesn't look 30lbs underweight. She is a bit on the lean side... I can see her hip bones but 30lbs she would obese. She's gorgeous! Kind of reminds me of a girly Broly!! haha! That's it Pitts!! You've gotta take her home with you!

This photo doesn't really do her justice.. Such a calm disposition.. sweet and great on leash. I walked her and spent time with her.. I hate that the GBHS is over crowded and the turn around time for her is roughly a week if that. I fear she will not be there long.. I bonded to a black pit mix with bright blue eyes.. They put her down in under a week. I was devastated.. So.. I am posting Pit-Mix's from now on in hopes that they will get adopted out.
Yes.. My judgement may have been off.. I am not use to lean dogs.. but I promise her hip bones ( you can't see in this photo) are poking through and she has a scar around her neck where her collar or rope cut into her neck. .

if you are in the Birmingham area or surrounding Alabama.. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is where she and another beautiful pit mix , Ginger are located.. Their adoption fee is $30. Not bad when you consider it a life saved!!

These images are just a fraction of what comes in on a daily basis with Animal Control. It's so frustrating to see this on a daily basis.. Birmingham is so overcrowded that this is a high kill shelter .. So what I do is check the LOST/FOUND section on their website and watch for them.. Sometimes they come through to the adoption floor.. sometimes they do not :(

No offense but I like my pure bred dogs, usually less health issues and more to the standard ect. Cute dog though

The shelter my girl came from has one of the highest kill rates. 95% of the dogs are bull breed mutts. It's in a very ghetto area and they are at full capacity pretty much at all times. The director was accused for mishandling the money and is or was being investigated for it and obviously fired. 30.00 a dog, wow. It's about 350.00-500.00 around here even at full capacity! Makes you wonder..... Yet they scream about wanting to "save a life" but they ask for 500.00?!

Sometimes they get put down because there is no other option. I don't believe that every life can be saved it would be a very dangerous thing to do so and hurt this breed even more if people kept doing that. Too many of these dogs are being adopted out to the wrong type of families as is. It's not just the back yard breeders that is the problem it's also the rescuers too. I'm all for rescue, I have 3 rescue dogs myself but sometimes letting a dog go is the right thing to do.

The same shelter that my girl came from adopted out a dog and that dog mauled his owner to death 3 days later. Her husband found her dead by the Christmas tree... and sadly, this was not the first time this has happened with a dog from there.

That is just heartbreaking to hear! Great post and points made! Our Humane Society in Birmingham is also Animal Control, so all dogs come to the shelter and are evaluated with temperament,etc.etc. I found my girl Millie on the lost and found section, as this is the area on the site where they are often euthanized within days and then if they make it on the adoption floor.. roughly a week before euthanized if not adopted. Because I called and requested her, the management made a note on her file to not Euthanize her per management request as they were going to do so. I had never met her in person, did not know her temperament nor did I know if she was dog aggressive ( as I have a smaller dog ) . It was all a big chance, in hopes the stars would align and she be well behaved.

In hindsight, I wouldn't do it to just any dog as I agree.. not all dogs can and will and should be saved due to unnecessary circumstances. Unfortunately, the lower income neighborhoods high in crime and drugs are feeding this problem as to own a 'vicious' dog or what they hope to train and become 'vicious' to protect their home is hurting the dog and the breed. Just imagine if these individuals all went after a Rottie or a German Shepherd.. then this would be the problem dog..

So I realize this is a thread I started a while back of all the Pits I interact with at the shelter.. where I walk them, play with them and love on them in hopes to have them adopted out.. sadly, all of these have since been euthanized. They were not DA or HA, they were simply over looked from potential adopters.

So this is just my Little forum where I can post and share the reality that this is a daily , weekly occurrence that I must realize not all bad dogs are euthanized.

This is in remebrance of the latest who I handled prior to euthanasia.

Leighann you are amazing. I’m so glad shelters have an angel working there like you.
Thank you for showing these poor, mistreated dogs at least a little bit of love before they are put down. It just breaks my heart that people are assholes and so uncaring.

RIP to all those, who didn't make it out to a responsible, loving family. Thanks to you, @LeighAnn for trying to help!
