This guy wandered into my grocery story last week. He's not fixed, and I was hesitant to call AC, knowing he'd be PTS sleep relatively quickly. He had a collar on and is very friendly. I've been trying to find the owner with no luck. I've got responses from the CL ad, but they're BS. What to do?

It really depends on you and your current situation. Are you willing to keep the dog if not properly claimed? Have you checked for microchip? If your not willing to keep the dog permanently, are you willing to keep the dog until rehomed? Good looking dog and looks cared for to be honest. Looks calm and wagging in the picture. I wouldn't personally call A/C. Although, I will say I never called or needed them....not that they would come anyway.

Can you bring the dog to a vet to have it scanned for a chip?

You can call AC and see if anyone has reported him missing-based on description and possibly location. I also second getting him scanned for a chip...and maybe by bringing him into a vet's office the staff there will recognize him and be able to contact his owner. You can put up a found dog flyer in your store-I wouldn't include a picture...but if I'd lost my dog-I would respond to every "found dog" flyer I saw...maybe his owners will do the same.

Be careful about the laws in your area before you decide to keep him. Some places it's a small amount of time (7 days or 10 days)...but in other places if the owner comes forward and can prove that's their dog-you have no course of action. Just a heads up before you go getting attached and all.

    Best of luck!

Unfortunately I couldn't keep him even if he's unclaimed. He's a little DA towards my male, so I've been crating and rotating. Not willing to do that permanently. Honestly just haven't had the time recently to bring him to a vet to have him scanned, but I will. He was filthy and underweight when I found him. Gave him a bath and been feeding him good. Now he's looking a lot better.

Most Animal Control facilities will list the dog as "found" for you without actually impounding him; and if they do, they'll have a list of lost dogs as well, and he may be on it. Definitely get him scanned for a chip, too.

I wouldn't call AC.... place an ad in the paper and put up flyers... but don't add a description. Make the person that calls describe the dog, color, sex and approximate age. Tell them to give you his name and call it to see if he responds. He is adorable, I would hate to see him go to AC, cause we all know what will happen to him then. He looks like a great dog. =)

Have you tried facebook? I know there is a Lost and Found Dog page for our state. Maybe check and see if there is one for your area and post there. People share like crazy so there is a chance the owner will surface. Also, call local vets and let them know you found a dog, give a description or email a picture, and maybe someone will recognize him. I'd put up a flyer at AC. A lot of AC officers are overworked or shift changes happen and dogs fall through the cracks. They may not put 2 and 2 together if there has been a report of a lost dog like him. If you put up a flyer and the owners come to AC to look maybe they'd see it.

Been all over FB. I honestly think he's not lost, but abandoned

Or he escaped his yard and the owners don't care enough to leave no stone unturned until they find him. Heck, maybe he was stolen and then abandoned or escaped. I've heard of teens and even older young people stealing a dog because they don't approve of how the dog is kept and then having nowhere to keep the dog they just stole so they simply let it loose rather than return it.

Life would be so much easier if these guys could talk!
