Food question

I have my dogs eating Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice nowadays...finally have them adjusted to where they don't have diarrhea after switching from Purina One, i did the gradual switch and they still had diarrhea for a couple WEEKS after.....it was on and off, it seems that i had to cut back on the amount of food that i was feeding them... I had been feeding them 2 cups a day of the purina one, but its almost like they just can't handle that much of the Diamond Naturals, its also large breed so the kibble is larger....They didnt have anything wrong with them, it didnt change their behavior or anything, they didnt act lethargic or anything....Any thoughts?

My actual question was going to be, would it be okay maybe once or twice a week to give them a cup or so of bananas, carrots, and apples? Would this benefit at all ? Or would I be better off adding things like this as a supplement to their daily meals? OR should i just keep these things solely for treats?

Just curious :D always looking for things to do that will better my dogs and make them healthy :D

Adding things to food....

Have you ever been to the site: www.dogaware.com

She has really great suggestions on different things to add to commercial food, fromt fruits & veggies, to things like yogurt (good for delicate stomachs), eggs, cottage cheese, salmon, jack mack, a little chopped meat, etc. IMHO, I think a whole cup of fruit is a lot for a dog to digest, but if you added a little bit every day, like a couple of slices of banana, or some berries, or something like that, it would be less taxing and also make their meals mroe enjoyable.

Also, a lot of bullies can't tolerate grains at all, so it's possible that the barley in the Diamond Naturals could still be a gastro-intestinal irritant.

Thanks so much for the info, and NO i have not been to that site, but I'm gonna take a look around....

As far as the barley in the Diamond Naturals, that makes a lot of sense, but I'm sure there is Grain in Purina One Lamb and Rice too, dont you think? They never had any problems while eating Purina One with diarhea..

One of the best foods for a bull terrier is tripe...breeders/owners over here have been feeding it to their bull terriers for decades ...i never hear you guys talk about it....do you even get it over there ??

As huckelbutt butt said in that other food there was very little actual nutrition so for this new food they don't need to eat as much most likely. Again they are probably just getting use the the change.

I feed my dogs apples, bananas and carrots. They are low calorie pretty health treats, but they really don't have much nutrition value. Especially if given whole and not ground up. You will notice it comes out the same same as it goes in almost lol. Body doesn't digest it well if its not ground up really good.

Garry: We have it here I know of some raw feeders that feed it, but I don't think anyone feeds raw on here. I sometimes do get my dogs meat bones from the butchers and stuff like that, but never tried the tripe.

I have never known a bull terrier that don't like tripe (Great for fussy eaters or underweight dogs )its the smell that they love the most....my mum you used to say it smelled like a grannys fanny ...
tripe is high in protein !

tripe is good for them, you can buy it at the super market whole, or at petco by the solid gold dog food is canned green tripe if you want it to be easier to give. IT STINKS!

Rhys is very sensitive and had terrible diarrhea and itching for the 2 months I tried him on Taste of The Wild, so I switched him on a rotation of Natures Variety Instinct kibble and home prepared prey model raw. I tried making the veggies to go with his raw, but the only thing it seemed to do is give him gas, lol. some dogs seem to do well with veggies though. He LOVES the Instinct kibble, and I practically had to shove TOTW down his throat. he is doing really well with that, stools almost immediately regulated and itching is much less.

I'm told that canned tripe doesn't have much value, better to buy it raw or dehydrated if you can. I have the canned stuff though from when Rhys wouldnt eat his kibble. he loves it. lol. sooo stinky. some companies have dehydrated tripe strips they sell. Petkind's are nice.

Lots of us bully people feed tripe! But I gave up buying the raw frozen stuff! Too stinky for a New York City apartment and a pain in the butt to cut up (I don't have a grinder). I buy the canned. For whoever asked, don't buy the white tripe they sell for humans, It is bleached, which strips most of the nutrients out. A butcher should be able to get you the unprocessed tripe. It smells nasty and is a putrid green color! In the States, the green tripe is frozen and sold in pet food stores that sell the better-quality foods or raw foods; we also have a couple of brands in canned: One is called Tripette (spelling?) and the other is, I think, made by Solid Gold? There might be other brands, but those are common here in NYC. I have a feeling DogAware.com: Diet Health Info for Man's Best Friend has a list of suppliers.

im gonna try that kind from petco, thanks danielle! is it just high in nutrients for them? or are there specifics that it is good for them for?

Green tripe gives helps not only in digestion, but a # of other things. One of the most important is the probiotics and utilization of other food synthesis. It replaces all of the natural bacteria that can be lost with dry kibble. It is also one of the easiest proteins for the dog to use.Hope this helps Oh ,and they do luv it.

Thanks for the explanation, that helps alot...i went to petsmart the other day and didn't find it...i'll go on over to petco and give a look around...

By the way Danielle, i was in petsmart and they had the Nutro person there walking around pitching their food to everyone...didnt you have an issue with nutro? I noticed that since i've switched chico and mia to diamond naturals, they're shedding a LOT, im thinking of taking another crack at the food choices again...two that are available are Taste of the Wild and Nutro...The thing with Taste of the Wild, i didn't see that they had a lamb formula, they had some interesting mixes like bison and venison, chico and mia have been on lamb and rice since they were born....kinda scared...Nutro has a lamb and rice formula

I have had problems with nuto. Just a lot of recalls in general, but I fed it for years then all of a sudden it started to make my dogs puke every time they ate it. I guess they changed the formula without saying and it made my dogs ill. I wouldn't suggest this brand.

TOTW is very very good food. Lamb and rice vs. TOTW isn't going to make a difference. TOTW is grain free so there is no nice and I think the bision one has lamb in it. As for shedding diamond naturals should be good for that, but do you think its maybe because its just summer? My dogs shed a lot too this time of year regardless of food. You should brush them daily and maybe try adding fish oil to their diet.

yeah i brush them daily, they try to eat the brush sometimes.... i dont know, i dont remember them shedding this much last year during this time, mia was a puppy puppy then so maybe thats why i notice it so much now, she's brindle and her hair is seen more easily on my tile floors now...hmmmm...but yeah i may try TOTW... does it really matter what formula? the fish formulas or the bison and venison?

I honestly have no idea. I didn't really read up on the differences between the formulas so I just figured maybe the fish formula had more Omega 3 than the others? Lol, I don't know. :p
