Syracuse, NY-- A 53-year-old man was charged Wednesday after police officers responded to his home, found him covered in blood and learned he had stabbed his two dogs, Syracuse police said.
Francis Mason, of 205 Ash St., Syracuse, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated animal cruelty.
Officers responded to Mason's Ash Street home around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a disturbance complaint. Officers discovered Mason standing in front of his home, with his hands and clothes covered in blood, police said.
Mason told officers he wasn't injured, police said, but an investigation revealed he had stabbed his two pit bull mixed breed dogs after they attacked another dog earlier.
Mason's dogs had apparently not obeyed his commands, Sgt. Gary Bulinski said, and he had used a 10-inch bayonet to stab the animals.
"This should never be done," Bulinski said. "Obviously there are other ways to handle a situation like that."
Police found the two injured dogs inside Mason's home. One female dog, named Dana, died at the home as a result of her injuries, police said. Officers were able to take a second female dog, named Lea, to the Veterinary Medical Center in East Syracuse. She was seriously injured, but treated, and appears to be in stable condition, police said.
The dog that was attacked suffered minor injuries and is expected to survive.
Mason was taken to the Onondaga County jail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Syracuse City Criminal Court Wednesday.
Police are not releasing Mason's photo because of upcoming court proceedings, Bulinski said.
