A defenseless dog was thrown out with the trash on Staten Island — leaving the pooch so badly injured she had to be euthanized, police said Friday.

The 12-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, named Barker by rescuers, was discovered when Sandra D'Auria, who was waiting for her daughter nearby, heard her barking inside a dumpster on Westfield and Bloomingdale Aves. in Rossville about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, cops said.

An employee at a nearby pizzeria jumped into the dumpster and found the dog wrapped in a towel and stuffed into a white plastic garbage bag, her head peeking out.

"We're pulling out the debris and then realizing that it was fur, and then realizing that it was a dog, and it kills you," D’Auria told ABC Eyewitness News. "My heart just kind of skipped a beat. I was in shock. You know, I've heard of animal cruelty before but I've never seen it firsthand."

Barker was taken to Greater Staten Island Veterinary Services for care, but the dog’s injuries were so severe she was euthanized Thursday. She suffered multiple broken bones, sources said.
