Do you leave a collar on your dog 24/7?

Do you leave your dog's collar on all the time? (Especially if they're the heavy duty, multi-layer ones like Stillwater sells.) I guess my worry is that a collar might catch on something when no one's home, but still would like her to wear her id/rabies tags since someone comes to walk her mid-day while I'm at work. We had a break-away collar for awhile that I always left on, but it came apart and the walker didn't notice/couldn't find it after retracing their route. Lola's already microchipped, but I just feel like having a collar/tags on makes it really, really super obvious to people that she's a pet and not a stray.

P.S. Apologies if this is the wrong section...I tried a variety of search phrases and couldn't find enough info. Plus Google now has me completely freaked out that she'll get caught on a door handle or something and strangle herself.

I'm not. Just few hours. I live in a house where my closest neighbor is 30km away.
When I'm at my apartment collar during the day and removed before he sleeps.

I normally do, but if Im giving her a bath or need to wash the collar, Ill just leave a small chain-martingale on her. That and she has itchy spots on teh side of her neck she loves to get scratched. Ill take a collar off for easier access.
  4. When he's in the house we leave his collar off, whenever he's going to leave the house the collar goes on... not sure what the general opinion on that is, but it's worked well for us, he's obedient in the house without it on and I don't really see any reason to have a collar on in the house unless you need to use the collar to control the dog.

Thank you, all. The question came up because the dog walker and I disagree - I take Lola's collar off and leave it by the door when I'm not there; the walker puts it on when she comes/doesn't take it off. Her argument is that if there's an emergency, no one's going to stop and try to find the dog's collar so if she runs off without any ID, it'll be harder to get her back. I'll (nicely) let the walker know that since I pay her, she can do what I ask, LOL.

When I'm home I use 1 1/4" nylon collar for in the house,so there is something to grab if shit happens. If he's alone in the crate I usually remove it.

I put on his collar in the morning for his walk then leave it on. Incase he starts to misbehave it's easier to grab the collar than his neck skin. I used a 1.5" Stillwater collar until 2 weeks ago when I got the kryptek collar 2" that goes on in morning then if he's being lazy I take it off while inside but when he's energetic I keep it on as he's much easier to control with a collar. Anytime he goes into the crate (when I tell him to go in) I take it off.

I leave mine off most of the time unless they come outside of fenced in yard but I have collars and leashes in same spot in case of emergency especially with tornado season around the corner!

Mine are never wearing a collar unless we're going out.

Here, too. I only put the collar on when we are leaving the house to walk or anything else that requires the leash - out to ride in the car, etc. No collar on in the house or outside playing in the yard. But, I am with them in the yard and has a 6 foot high block fence. They are never left alone out there. Always supervised. Mostly because I don't want some ahole stealing them.

GiGi wears hers 24/7... she gets all pissy when I take it off to give her a bath... she considers it hers and she wants it on....
She knows which halter is hers too and she does not like us to be talking to buddy and pick up her halter... very possessive little bitch.

Lol that is hilarious. Remy keeps trying to lick and chew it when I take it off.

Our last dog wore his 24/7 and the stupid jingle of his tags was one thing that made the silence so odd when he died.

Our current dog doesn't wear a collar in the house. I actually leave it hooked to her leash and just put it on her at the door.

LOL, GiGi! Lola acts like any collar is weighing her down, but when she got her awesome 1.5" Stillwater collar, she got super dramatic and pretended she couldn't lift her head at all. It's only been a few days and she still runs off when she sees it.

Bentley has a 3/4" martingale that's on almost all the time. I need to have it on him because he's my testy male that will have spurts of dog aggression that I need to step in for, such as unavoidable situations like a knock at the door. He redirects on any dog standing nearby and it's easiest for me to use his martingale as a handle to physically remove him.

The only time he's not wearing it is if he's getting a bath, he's in a crate, or he's behind a closed door with me. All other times, he's always got it on.

My other 2 dogs don't have issues with redirection. They are mostly naked. Except Arnold has a sweater that he wears 24/7 and gets super upset and moody if you take it off of him.
