Oh come on, really?...really!?? We all KNOW that owning an APBT is very different from owning a lab! And they very much require different skills and knowledge.

Actually, a hypocrite would be one who does not respect and admire a breeds traits characteristic and temperament in its purebred and pedigreed form ... yet insists on using the breed name to label dogs from unknown origin and pedigree. THAT is a hypocrite

Nah Joe, it ain't like that ;) I see it this way.. Since Sam was being sold as a "Pit Bull" and she resembles a pit bull mix, would it not be wise for me to acknowledge her Pit Bull side and research its traits?

    DancesWithCurs Good Dog

    Yup. They're all unicorns

Pit Bull is two words
By the way, how did Sam do in her last match ?? ;) <<< wink emoticon

Joe; would you call a Pit bull that isn't matched, a non Pitbull, just because he/she takes parts in shows instead?

I don't believe a dog needs to be matched to be a 'Pit bull'

I know its two words! I would change that too  like I said, I made it when I was a noobie to the bully world! And she licked her challenger to death in the pit just this last Friday.

    Actually wait.

I'm just gonna start calling dogs stuff based on what they do. Shadow was a "Leg Humping Wuffing Terrier"

And where exactly did i say owning a APBT is same as owning a lab?....or any other breed for that matter?.....I said, the rules of responsible ownership is universal to dog ownership....Every individual dog is different and different breeds have different breed traits, but ultimately, its up to you the owner to apply these rules to your dog, and yes obviously different breeds require slightly different skills and know how. As such the rules will be applied differently to each dog, but the rules themselves are the same.

Breeds have different traits. Yes, now THATS why its important to label a Pit Bull mix as a Pit Bull mix- to better understand those traits. And not say "oh, its not papered so its not a Pit Bull, its a mutt."

Once again have to repeat myself...where did i say you shouldn't call a pitbull mix a pitbull mix?

    I said..pay attention this time...

I said..if you have a dog from unknown ancestry, then don't assign breed names based on looks.

If you know a dog is actually a pitbull mix, as in you know for sure either the sire or dam is a pitbull...but not sure about one half. By all means call it a pitbull mix...because thats what it is. But if you have no idea what neither parent is....just stop making assumptions about the breed of dog its mixed with based purely on looks.

Just so you dont have to hunt it down, here is my exact quote.

I clearly said, if you want to assign a breed name and then a mix...then your saying you know for sure the part of the lineage. Which i have no problem with.

But basing it purely on looks is plain erroneous, and dangerous in the hands of someone like the govt.

Mason isn't matched but he is still a registered American Pit Bull Terrier. So of course I would and so no ... obviously a dog doesn't have to be matched to be a Pit Bull. However, I've already explained that I didn't call Rowdy a pit bull and why. But that's just me.

The bottom line is that it doesn't matter what I call my dogs. I'm just glad I know enough about my dogs to know which circle I'm standing in while I learn something new about them everyday.

Call your dogs what you will but don't expect that someone may not have an opinion ... main stream media and the general public certainly does and as far as I know, all we are as members here are the general public with a personal interest in our dogs, their history and their welfare in common. While we disagree from time to time, it's only words ... and the dogs couldn't care less.

just curious but how many people really get asked what their dog is?

i think in 4 years of having Peanut i have only been asked like 2-3 times and that was mostly when he was a little puppy.
